Job description

The team

Cornwall offers a distinctive lifestyle with coastline, countryside, and heritage all close at hand. The council also highlights a relocation support package for eligible hires, designed to help people move to Cornwall and improve their work-life balance.

This opening sits within a competitive Building Control environment, where the service supports both local businesses and communities across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The role

The post is focused mainly on site inspections. A dedicated pool car is available for each inspection area. Although the formal base is stated as the Bodmin or Pool office, the Building Control team largely works from home, with office bases available across Cornwall.

Working arrangements

The council promotes flexible working patterns to support a better balance between work and personal life. Part-time and compressed hours are also discussed as possible options, subject to service needs.

What you need to bring

The successful candidate should be customer-oriented, able to work well under pressure, and experienced in a high-standard Building Control setting. Strong knowledge of the legislation and technical guidance behind the Building Regulations is important, along with the ability to manage and prioritise a busy workload effectively.

You should be able to work independently in a prompt, professional way and contribute positively to the productivity of the service. A relevant degree and membership of a recognised professional body such as RICS, CABE, or CIOB would be ideal. The preferred registration level is Class 2A-F Registered Building Inspector, although applicants registered at Class 2A RBI may also be considered. The council is also keen to hear from candidates looking for a fresh challenge.

Rewards and benefits

Cornwall Council says it aims to be an employer of choice and offers a package intended to support and recognise employees. Benefits include a defined benefit pension scheme based on career-average earnings, with the option of voluntary contributions, plus generous annual leave and the ability to buy extra leave.

Other benefits include a wellbeing programme, access to employee discounts, up to two flexi days in each four-week block, support for career development, access to the myLABC training package, payment of professional fees including BSR fees, and a supportive home-or-office-based working environment. A relocation package may be available for eligible candidates.

Additional requirements and conditions

This is a public-facing role, so the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies. The position is also subject to a standard criminal record disclosure check.

The council cannot provide visa sponsorship for this role, including transfer of an existing sponsorship arrangement.

Application process

Applicants are asked to include a supporting statement. Education and qualification details can be entered manually in the application timeline, or a CV can be uploaded. Candidates should clearly show how they meet each application point in the role profile, using qualifications, work examples, or relevant personal experience to explain what they did and the impact it had.

If you need help with your application, the council asks that you contact careers@cornwall.gov.uk. Current employees must apply using their Cornwall Council email address through the Opportunity Marketplace on Oracle.
