Job description
About the organisation
Stats NZ is the national statistics agency, where analytical work helps shape how Aotearoa understands its people, economy, and the systems that support everyday life. The work has real national relevance and also contributes to international impact, while offering strong opportunities to deepen your analytical capability.
Role overview
There are several two-year fixed-term opportunities available within the Insights and Statistics group for Senior Data Analysts based in Pōneke (Wellington) and Ōtautahi (Christchurch). These positions focus on modernising the frameworks, methods, and insights that support some of New Zealand’s most important economic statistics.
In this role, you will take ownership of high-value analytical work that influences government decision-making, business planning, and the services communities depend on. You will work close to the front end of analysis, helping shape how data is organised, interpreted, and produced.
What the role involves
You will lead complex analytical and statistical initiatives from initial design through to release and ongoing improvement. The work includes finding better ways to produce and use data, introducing automation and AI where appropriate, and improving the long-term reliability and efficiency of systems and processes.
You will operate in an agile environment and respond to shifting priorities while keeping attention on quality and outcomes. In addition to delivery, you will help strengthen team capability by coaching colleagues, sharing knowledge, and promoting consistent, high-standard ways of working.
Additional information
Location options are Wellington or Christchurch, or you must be willing to relocate.
The salary range for these positions is NZ$97,270 to NZ$114,436.
Applications are reviewed as they come in, and the recruitment process is expected to progress quickly to interviews.
If you need any adjustments or support during the process, the organisation encourages you to get in touch so the process can be made accessible.
For role-related questions, contact Nadine Eales at Nadine.Eales@stats.govt.nz.
Externally, the position is referred to as Senior Data Analyst. Internally, depending on the focus of the role, the title may be Senior Design Analyst or Senior Insights Analyst.
How to apply
To apply, submit your CV and complete a short questionnaire with three capability-based questions. A cover letter is not required.
What you will bring
You should bring relevant study or practical experience in economics, finance, statistics, or a similar field, along with the ability to work independently on complex analytical and statistical assignments.
The role suits someone with strong analytical skills, confidence working with complex datasets, and the ability to turn data into meaningful insight.
Experience improving methods, workflows, or systems is important, especially where you have designed more efficient or scalable ways of working.
You will also need sound judgement, comfort operating in ambiguous situations, strong conceptual thinking, and experience coaching or mentoring others to raise capability and consistency.
Key outcomes
Success in this role means being able to own analytical work end to end, improve products and processes, integrate data from multiple sources, and help build trusted relationships through credible advice and leadership.
About the team and impact
Stats NZ plays an essential role in New Zealand’s data system by setting expectations for quality, integrity, and stewardship. The organisation influences how data is trusted and used across sectors, and these roles build a valuable combination of technical, analytical, and professional strengths for future career growth.
