Job description

Role overview

Corlann West Region is seeking a Senior Community Facilitator for Beo Services in Knocknacarra, County Galway. This is a permanent, part-time appointment supporting adults with intellectual disabilities through a community-based, person-centred approach. A panel may also be created from this recruitment process to fill future permanent and temporary Senior Community Facilitator roles in Beo Services over the next 12 months.

About Corlann and Beo Services

Corlann West Region delivers community-focused services for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, with an emphasis on each person’s needs, abilities, choice and inclusion. The organisation’s aim is to help people build ordinary everyday lives, stay connected with family and friends, and participate fully in their communities. Beo Adult Services offers day, residential, respite, outreach, family support and multidisciplinary supports across a range of settings, including day centres, supported employment, social and micro-enterprise activity, training, education and residential supports in homes and community settings.

The service is looking for a person who is creative, motivated, adaptable and open to change, and who can contribute positively as part of a team.

Main purpose of the role

The Senior Community Facilitator will work under the direction of the Team Leader and alongside the wider team, while also taking on a key worker function for identified individuals. The role includes helping create a safe and supportive environment where people can join community and leisure activities, make choices, experience new opportunities and work towards a fulfilling lifestyle.

The post-holder will also cover for the Team Leader when needed and act as the senior person on duty when required, providing guidance, advice and support to the wider Beo Services team. The initial placement will be in a specific Beo Day Service, but the base may change depending on service requirements.

Key duties and working context

  • Support individuals to take part in local community and leisure activities.
  • Encourage and assist people to make personal decisions and exercise choice.
  • Help people access experiences that expand their skills, confidence and opportunities.
  • Act as key worker for assigned individuals.
  • Step into the Team Leader role in their absence when needed.
  • Provide senior support and a point of contact for Beo Services when required.
  • Work flexibly across service locations as demands change.
  • Contribute to a person-centred, quality-focused service model based on Personal Outcome Measures and planning.

Qualifications, experience and requirements

Candidates should hold at least a QQI Level 7 qualification relevant to Social Care or an equivalent qualification. Relevant backgrounds may also include Community Development, Creative Digital Media, Creative Arts, Arts and Design, such as Pottery, Ceramics or Craft Textiles.

Previous experience of around 2 to 3 years in designing and delivering programmes is desirable, particularly where this supports the duties of the role and demonstrates awareness of the needs of people with intellectual disabilities. Training will be provided.

A full clean manual driving licence is essential, along with the use of the candidate’s own vehicle. The licence must allow operation of manual transmission vehicles on Irish roads. It may also be necessary to obtain a Class D1 driving licence, if not already held; assistance will be provided to help with that process.

Applicants should be competent in IT, including use of computers, modern technology, online systems and assistive technology. Strong written and spoken English is required. Good teamwork, creativity, positivity and enthusiasm are also important for success in the post.

Skills and personal qualities

  • Leadership and positive role modelling
  • Planning and organisational ability
  • Initiative in developing day programmes and activities
  • Clear verbal and written communication
  • Active listening
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Self-motivation
  • Positive risk-taking
  • Commitment to current best practice
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, person-centred team

  • Ability to build links with community groups

Working hours

This post is a permanent full-time position of 78 hours per fortnight. The roster is Monday to Friday, and working hours may change to meet programme needs. Shifts may fall between 8:00am and 8:00pm. The role also requires flexibility to move to other locations if service needs change.

Leave and tenure

Annual leave is 22 days per year, pro-rated for part-time staff, equivalent to 8.46 hours per 100 hours worked.

The role is permanent, full-time and pensionable. A probationary period of nine months applies from the date of appointment, during which employment may be ended if the employer considers the appointee unsuitable. The probation period may be extended at the employer’s discretion.
