Role overview
This opportunity is for an experienced senior roaster to take ownership of the roasting program and help deliver coffee that is reliable, high quality, and aligned with brand standards. The role combines hands-on roasting with leadership, quality assurance, and ongoing improvement across sourcing, production, and training.
The roasting team is central to the company’s vision of placing exceptional coffee on benchtops everywhere and strengthening customer trust through consistently excellent coffee for both customers and partners. Day-to-day work will centre on preparing and roasting core blends and single-origin coffees.
Key duties
- Guide, strengthen, and develop the roasting function.
- Coordinate with the NZ Operations Manager, NZ Production Manager, Head of Coffee, and other stakeholders to make sure adequate green coffee is available to meet production requirements.
- Prepare green coffee for roasting in line with approved blend recipes.
- Carry out roasting to the production plan while maintaining stable and repeatable roast profiles.
- Log roasting information and carry out QA and QC checks.
- Complete sample roasting and small-batch roasting as needed.
- Support the learning and capability growth of other roasters and roasting assistants.
- Complete assigned cleaning and service routines.
- Keep production spaces and equipment tidy, well maintained, and organised.
- Load and unload inbound and outbound goods safely.
- Store stock in the correct warehouse locations.
- Carry out stock counts on a regular basis.
- Organise and join cupping sessions regularly.
- Contribute to research and development work.
- Welcome and assist customers, suppliers, and other visitors to the roastery.
- Take part in roastery events.
Working hours
This is a salaried full-time position based on 40 hours each week. Normal working hours are between 6:00am and 7:00pm, Monday through Saturday.
Candidate profile
The ideal applicant is a seasoned coffee roaster who enjoys hands-on roasting while also helping shape the future of the roasting department. Strong organisation, attention to detail, and the ability to work to deadlines are essential.
Required experience and capabilities
- At least 4 years of coffee roasting experience is required.
- Experience handling high-volume roasting, ideally 10+ tonnes per week, is preferred.
- Previous leadership experience is needed.
- Hands-on experience with Cropster is essential.
- Excellent attention to detail is important.
- The role requires a highly organised approach and the ability to meet deadlines.
- You must be physically fit and able to lift and move heavy items safely.
- A forklift licence would be an advantage.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are needed.
- You should be able to prioritise effectively and adapt to changing workloads.
- A refined palate and a desire to keep building coffee knowledge are important.
- Advanced roast profiling and product development skills are expected.
- Good knowledge of espresso extraction and non-pressurised brewing methods is required.
- Understanding of specialty coffee farming and processing is important.
- A practical, solution-oriented mindset is valued.
- Experience with coffee quality control is required.
