Role overview
The San Diego Padres are hiring a part-time, non-exempt Security Officer to support the Security and Transportation team at Petco Park in San Diego, CA. In this role, you will help maintain a safe environment for guests, employees, contractors, and visitors by monitoring the ballpark, handling access control, and responding to incidents professionally.
Key duties
- Monitor ballpark grounds during assigned shifts and help keep the property secure in a courteous, service-oriented way.
- Carry out magnetometer checks and bag inspections for employees, contractors, visitors, and guests.
- Manage entry to restricted and protected areas.
- Respond appropriately to safety issues, criminal activity, medical situations, alarms, and property damage, including involving emergency responders when required.
- Perform internal incident reviews and prepare clear, factual reports.
- Attend pre-shift briefings to understand scheduled events, activities, and the status of load-ins and load-outs.
- Serve as a first responder for property-related incidents and calls.
- Protect sensitive information and keep all confidential matters secure.
- Maintain accurate logs, notes, and shift handoff information.
- Complete activity logs, incident reports, repair forms, and related documentation promptly and legibly.
- Welcome clients, staff, guests, and vendors in a professional manner.
- Follow established ballpark security procedures at all times.
- Work with other departments to support a positive public image for the club.
- Represent the organization professionally at all times.
- Take on additional duties as assigned.
Skills and experience preferred
The ideal candidate brings strong judgment, integrity, and reliability, along with the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels. Comfort with independent decision-making, discretion, and professional conduct is important. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is expected, and experience with report writing or the Avigilon CCTV system is an advantage. Backgrounds in large public venues, event security, criminal justice or formal security training, and public safety can be helpful. Bilingual English/Spanish ability is also a plus.
Requirements
- You must be 18 years of age or older by the start date.
- A high school diploma or GED, plus two years of related experience or training, or an equivalent mix of education and experience is required.
- A valid driver’s license with a good driving record is required and will be reviewed.
- You must be able to obtain or already hold a BSIS Security Guard credential within the first 30 days.
- Part-time officers must be available for at least three shifts per month on non-event days; shifts may be four or eight hours depending on operational needs, and hours are not guaranteed.
- You must be available for at least 75% of scheduled events during the calendar year, including Padres home games, full-venue events, and Gallagher Square concerts.
- The role requires the ability to move throughout the ballpark, stand for long periods, climb stairs, lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and ride a bicycle for extended periods.
- Employment is conditional on completing all post-offer and pre-employment checks, including a background screening.
Compensation and benefits
The hourly wage for this position is $21.14, and pay may be adjusted upward to comply with the San Diego Living Wage Ordinance for part-time, non-union employees. In addition to hourly pay, the Padres provide PTO, employee discounts, and recognition/appreciation opportunities.
