Role summary
The Secure Document Designer position is a permanent, full-time role based at 18 Auriga Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with a hybrid work arrangement. This role supports the Design Department and is intended to backfill an existing vacancy.
In this role, you will use strong artistic and conceptual design abilities to create, refine, and finalize artwork for secure documents used in a variety of applications such as banknotes, passports, driver licences, identification cards, certificates, and similar products. The work requires a strong blend of creativity, precision, and technical design knowledge.
Key responsibilities
- Develop early-stage concepts and visual models for secure products, including banknotes, travel documents, identity documents, certificates, and cards.
- Support the ongoing creation of new security feature concepts by applying creative design approaches.
- Research reference material, prepare artwork, and turn concept ideas into final production-ready files.
- Create illustrations and drawings that support concept development.
- Produce and present design proofs and presentation models for customer review.
- Work with production teams to review concepts and apply feedback so the artwork meets manufacturing requirements.
- Create secure line work suitable for production use.
- Take part in press proof trials and initial production runs when needed to help secure customer approval.
- Build and maintain organized file-management systems for all assigned projects.
- Work with sales and customer teams to understand design needs and explain the reasoning behind design decisions.
- Prepare detailed design presentations for design and marketing initiatives.
Required qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in graphic arts, design, or a related discipline, or an equivalent mix of education and relevant professional experience.
- Strong understanding of graphic design principles.
- Working knowledge of secure document design, including security features and secure line work.
- Understanding of how design elements are integrated with required security features.
- Familiarity with security print production processes and requirements.
- Experience with specialized secure design tools such as JURA JSP or Giori One.
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
- Comfort using Microsoft 365 tools such as Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
- Strong design, composition, illustration, and drawing ability.
- Ability to render portraits and detailed subject matter with a high degree of accuracy.
- At least 1 year of experience in composition, design, and integration for security documents.
- Fluency in English, including reading, writing, and speaking.
- A portfolio of work must be submitted.
