Job description

Role Summary

Hartree Partners is looking for a Risk Analyst to help manage risk data, reporting, and controls across the business. The role sits within the Risk function and supports the monitoring of trading, hedging, and marketing activity so senior leadership has clear visibility into the firm’s major exposures.

About the Company

Hartree Partners, LP is a global commodity merchant with operations across energy, metals, agriculture, and environmental products. Founded in 1997 and jointly owned by senior management and Oaktree Capital Management–managed funds, the firm has a worldwide workforce of more than 5,000 people. Its business spans trading, asset investments, risk management, and advisory services, backed by centralized support across risk, technology, operations, finance, HR, legal, and compliance. The company continues to grow, invest in new assets, and build new capabilities to capture new market opportunities.

What You’ll Do

  • Handle data operations such as collecting, checking, transforming, and profiling information, including parsing, aggregations, derivations, grading, and modelling.
  • Help design and build new risk oversight tools, reports, and projects as part of an embedded risk development team.
  • Run daily risk measurement reporting, maintain quality controls, and implement process improvements.
  • Track daily alerts and trading guidelines, including notional size, tenor, and VaR, and document any breaches of limits or guidelines.
  • Carry out quantitative and fundamental research to support portfolio investment decisions.
  • Produce analysis that helps guide business decisions and supports commercial growth of the portfolio.
  • Work with the business to identify and assess risk, including surfacing and discussing emerging risks.
  • Take an active role in conversations with traders and team members about trading strategy, risk/reward trade-offs, embedded optionality in structured transactions, and alternative structures that may improve returns.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is required, ideally in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 1–2 years of relevant experience in risk management, analytics, trading support, or a similar field.
  • Strong working knowledge of spreadsheets with VBA, databases with SQL, and programming in Python.
  • Ability to work independently and with strong personal drive.
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and work across functions.
  • Preferred exposure to US gas and power markets and derivatives such as futures and swaps.
  • Preferred understanding of risk measures including Value-at-Risk and stress testing.
  • Preferred experience with numerical computing libraries such as NumPy.
  • The employer encourages applicants even if they do not meet every listed requirement, as potential is valued alongside experience.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected base salary range for this role is $98,500 to $104,300 per year. In addition, employees may qualify for a discretionary bonus on top of base pay. The package is described as competitive and includes benefits along with strong career development opportunities.
