Role Overview
The tailor role in a retail alterations setting is responsible for delivering precise garment fit through alterations, measurements, fittings, and repair work. The position calls for strong sewing ability, careful attention to detail, dependable work habits, and a commitment to customer satisfaction. The tailor also helps maintain a professional, collaborative environment and follows company standards consistently.
Tailor Shop Production and Operations
- Carry out common alteration work efficiently, including pant hems, waist and seat adjustments, rise changes, tapering, coat sleeve work, side seam adjustments, and lower collar alterations, following company direction.
- Maintain an average of 60 minutes of productive alteration work per working hour, while allowing time for breaks, meals, and other non-tailoring duties as needed.
- Check that every finished garment meets quality expectations, with neat finishing, secure stitching, straight seams, and no loose threads or pins left behind.
- Press completed garments so they have a sharp, polished appearance.
- Keep the work area tidy, orderly, and efficient, and store all tools and materials correctly.
- Use all tailoring equipment confidently and correctly.
- Tag, organize, and prepare completed items accurately for customer collection.
- Track tailoring supplies and alert management when replenishment is needed.
Customer Service
- Help with front-of-store tasks when needed, such as cleaning, restocking, or assisting shoppers.
- Join customer fitting conversations when directed by management and provide useful advice on alteration options and fit.
- Offer attentive, personalized service by understanding customer needs and suggesting practical solutions.
- Adjust to changing priorities and scheduling requirements as requested by management.
Teamwork and Workplace Standards
- Share tailoring knowledge and techniques with other tailors to support consistent workmanship and skill growth.
- Help train sales associates on basics such as marking, fitting, measuring, and pressing.
- Accept feedback constructively and communicate concerns or requests in a timely way.
- Report incidents, accidents, and safety concerns to the manager on duty and/or the Regional Manager.
- Support sales associates by explaining tailoring details that improve product knowledge and customer service.
- Maintain professional appearance and personal grooming standards.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Be able to use small tools and equipment such as needles, scissors, sewing machines, and presses with accuracy.
- Follow detailed instructions carefully and complete work accordingly.
- Remain seated or standing for long periods.
- Show strong attention to detail so garments consistently meet quality standards.
- Manage time effectively to complete alterations within required timelines.
- Communicate clearly and professionally.
- Read, count, and write accurately to complete documentation.
- Be able to bend, squat, reach overhead, and use ladders to access merchandise and supplies stored above shoulder height.
- Be available to work at least 40 hours per week when required, including any days and hours the store operates.
