Job description

Role overview

This permanent operational role is based in Llechryd and supports a 24/7 response service. The post sits within the Response Pod team and is focused on keeping service interruptions to a minimum while protecting water quality, customer experience, and safety.

Job requisition number: 8736. There are 2 vacancies for this position. Closing date: 23:59 on 02 July 2026.

What the role involves

  • Help the Response Pod team provide a reliable round-the-clock service with no preventable service failures.
  • Act on instructions from the Operational Response and Control teams, keep them informed of progress, and make sure customers understand what is happening at every stage.
  • Investigate incidents ranging from individual customer issues to major failures on large-diameter water mains, identify the fault, and take the appropriate action to resolve it.
  • Deal directly with customers during urgent incidents and explain the next steps clearly.
  • Keep vehicles, plant, and equipment maintained and deployment-ready, with strong attention to Water Quality and Safety compliance.
  • Use emergency response equipment to restore supply quickly while safeguarding water quality and the environment.
  • Support planned distribution network work, making sure risk assessments and method statements are followed and that safety and water quality remain the top priority.
  • Assist with leakage detection and maintenance work to help meet operational targets.
  • Monitor contractor performance through inspections and safety conversations, review RAMS for suitability, and issue Permits to Work and Certificates of Isolation when required.
  • Complete live on-site risk assessments to identify hazards and reduce risks as far as possible.
  • Follow all health and safety legislation and company health and safety policies in day-to-day work.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks to meet Road Traffic Act and operator licence requirements, and accurately report defects.
  • Record all work and actions in corporate systems such as SAP, PowerApps, and Procedural Forms.
  • Collect water quality samples from tankers and temporary supplies, and follow logistics arrangements so samples reach the laboratory on time.
  • Support the Operations Supervisor and Compliance teams by ensuring HGV drivers’ hours are correctly recorded, monitored, and never exceeded.
  • Make sure tanker, bowser, and hose chlorination is completed and logged when needed.
  • Communicate tanker and equipment availability clearly so supply interruption mitigation can be planned effectively.
  • Escalate the need for driver changeovers or extra resource promptly.
  • Raise any water quality issues or risks immediately.
  • Take part in a standby rota and handle other duties as required by the business.

Shift pattern and working arrangements

This post follows a fixed 12-hour rotating shift pattern: two day shifts from 6:00am to 6:00pm, followed by two night shifts from 6:00pm to 6:00am, then four consecutive days off. The cycle repeats eight times, after which there is an additional 18 consecutive days off before the rota restarts.

Because the rota is fixed, annual leave is already built into it and cannot be booked separately. In exceptional situations, there may be scope to swap shifts or buy extra leave.

Additional requirements

Shift working is a core part of the role. A 25% shift allowance is paid on top of base salary.

For an informal conversation about the role, contact James.Reynolds@dwrcymru.com and include job requisition number 8736 in the email subject.

The organisation may close the role early if needed, so applicants are encouraged to apply promptly. The closing date may also be extended depending on response levels.

Because of the industry, successful candidates must provide satisfactory references, complete post-offer medical clearance, and pass a Basic Disclosure criminal records check. Some roles may require extra checks and security clearance, and the offer depends on all checks being completed successfully.

Benefits

In addition to a market-competitive salary, the package includes 33 days of annual leave pro rata, including public holidays, plus a range of rewards and employee benefits.

Additional benefits include performance-related variable pay, the option to buy up to 5 extra days of annual leave each year, enhanced employer pension contributions of up to 11%, free mortgage brokering services, enhanced family-friendly policies, funded training and coaching/mentoring opportunities, gym and fitness discounts, high street shopping discounts, a cycle-to-work scheme, discounts at Welsh Water visitor attraction centres and gift shops, a car leasing scheme, free on-site parking, a Health CashBack scheme, access to an online GP service, and an employee assistance programme for employees and their immediate family.

Other information

Reference checks, medical clearance, and Basic Disclosure are required for new starters, and additional checks may apply depending on the role. Further instructions for completing the checks will be sent by email after offer acceptance.
