Job description

Role overview

Hays Property and Surveying is hiring a Recruitment Consultant to join its well-established Construction & Property team in Chelmsford. This position has opened because the team is expanding, giving you the chance to grow the public sector temporary desk. There is strong demand across public sector property, estates and surveying vacancies.

The role covers Essex, Hertfordshire, South Buckinghamshire and East London. You will work with property, estates and surveying employers, including local authorities and housing organisations, helping them recruit for roles ranging from entry-level positions through to senior appointments.

Market demand is currently supported by high activity from local government and public agencies, increasing need for specialist technical surveying talent, and a steady public sector employment base that continues to drive property-related hiring.

About the team

You will be part of an established team with a strong reputation, deep client relationships and a broad network. The group is performing strongly, making this a great time to join. The environment is collaborative and inclusive, with the tools and support needed to succeed and progress.

Key responsibilities

As a Recruitment Consultant, you will take ownership of business development and candidate delivery across the property, surveying and public sector estates market.

  • Carry out proactive sales activity, including both cold and warm calls, to connect with hiring managers in construction, property and public sector estates.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with directors, estates leaders, property managers and HR partners.
  • Recruit for a wide variety of positions, such as Building Surveyors, Valuation Surveyors, Development Surveyors, Estates Managers, Project Managers and Quantity Surveyors.
  • Source, assess and shortlist high-calibre candidates from both private and public sector backgrounds.
  • Attend in-person client meetings across Chelmsford, Essex and Hertfordshire.
  • Prepare reports, manage candidate compliance and contribute to internal projects.
  • Work towards daily KPIs and revenue targets while benefiting from uncapped commission potential.

What the employer is looking for

The ideal candidate will be commercially minded, resilient and motivated by sales and target-led work. A professional approach and strong communication skills are essential, along with the ability to take initiative in a competitive environment.

An understanding of 360 recruitment and a genuine interest in building a career in the sector will be valuable. Previous recruitment experience is preferred, but it is not essential.

Pay and benefits

The salary range for this role is £27,937 to £43,708. Principal-level roles and above also include a car allowance, and commission is uncapped. Commission is paid once the invoice has been raised, on a four-week cycle.

Additional benefits include the chance to qualify for international incentive trips, generous holiday entitlement from day one, your birthday off, the option to buy or sell annual leave, hybrid working after probation, and SMART benefits such as shopping discounts, gym discounts, cycle-to-work schemes, and holiday purchase/sale options.

The company promotes a culture based on trust, collaboration, expertise and doing the right thing. It also places emphasis on social purpose, sustainability and creating inclusive opportunities for people to thrive.

This is a full-time office-based position in Chelmsford, England, United Kingdom. Hybrid working may be available after probation.
