Job description
About the Company
Umbrellar Technology Group is a New Zealand-owned technology business with more than two decades of experience supporting some of the country’s most important infrastructure. It works with organisations ranging from smaller businesses to large enterprises, delivering public, private, and hybrid cloud platforms, data environments, and secure AI solutions. Built on a background in data centre services and strong Microsoft capability, the company has grown into a modern provider of cloud infrastructure and managed services, with an expanding Data and AI offering.
The organisation describes itself as a close team that values collaboration, empowerment, ongoing learning, and doing the right thing. It also places importance on diversity, inclusion, and creating an environment where people are supported to succeed.
Role Purpose
This position is responsible for leading the full delivery of a growing mix of Azure, AI, Data, and software development projects. Working with engineering, sales, and customer teams, the Project Manager will ensure work is delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the quality standards expected by customers.
The role covers a varied portfolio, from tightly scoped assignments through to large, multi-workstream cloud transformation and software programmes. The company is seeking a self-directed person who is committed to establishing a best-practice approach to project delivery.
The work spans cloud infrastructure, data and AI, and software development. A practical understanding of these areas is important, but the role is centred on delivery leadership, coordination, and stakeholder management across multi-disciplinary teams. You will operate independently across several concurrent customer engagements, some short and fixed in scope and others running across multiple phases, while also helping shape and improve the company’s project delivery practice.
This is a fast-moving consultancy setting where project scope can change and requirements are not always fully defined at the outset. The ideal candidate will be comfortable creating structure from ambiguity and helping shape delivery as engagements develop.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the project lifecycle from initiation and planning through execution, monitoring, closure, and handover.
- Prepare and keep project plans, schedules, budgets, RAID logs, and documentation accurate, current, and well maintained.
- Direct delivery of Azure professional services work, including assessments, remediation, migrations, modernisation, Azure Local, hybrid solutions, and AVD.
- Coordinate Microsoft AI work delivered on Azure AI Foundry, as well as Data & AI initiatives on Microsoft Fabric.
- Oversee software development delivery across web application projects.
- Develop strong working relationships with customer stakeholders and act as a reliable point of contact throughout each engagement.
- Partner with architects to run workshops and help define functional and non-functional requirements in a consultative way.
- Set a steady delivery cadence, including stand-ups, status reporting, governance meetings, and steering committees, with clear and timely communication.
- Handle project budgets, forecasting, cost tracking, and profitability.
- Identify scope changes and raise variations with customers to protect commercial outcomes for all parties.
- Anticipate, assess, and manage risks, issues, and dependencies, and drive timely mitigation and resolution.
- Follow Umbrellar’s delivery framework, governance expectations, and quality standards.
- Run post-implementation reviews and lessons learned sessions to strengthen future delivery.
Experience and Qualifications
- At least 5 years of project management experience in IT, with a strong emphasis on cloud or infrastructure delivery.
- At least 3 years delivering Microsoft Azure projects, including migrations, modernisation, hybrid solutions, or managed services.
- Proven delivery experience in software projects, such as web, .NET, or CMS-based work.
- Hands-on experience with both Agile/Scrum and Waterfall approaches, with sound judgement on when to use each.
- Experience using project management and collaboration tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, and MS Project.
- Background in a consultancy, systems integrator, or managed services environment.
Highly Valued Skills and Experience
- Project management certification such as PMP, PRINCE2, or an equivalent qualification.
- Exposure to Azure AI Foundry, Microsoft Fabric, and modern data and AI delivery approaches.
- Familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and automation practices.
- Understanding of cloud governance, security, and compliance frameworks.
Personal Attributes
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Ability to manage stakeholders well, influence different audiences, and build trust across all levels.
- Highly structured approach with strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritise several active projects at once.
- Resilient and adaptable under changing conditions.
- Committed to own growth and to supporting the development of others.
- Self-driven, proactive, and motivated to take initiative.
- Willing to share knowledge and contribute to a culture of continuous learning.
- Focused on delivering a strong customer experience.
Benefits
- 10 extra days of leave in addition to 20 days of annual leave.
- Medical and life insurance coverage.
- A modern and enjoyable office environment in Takapuna.
- A supportive, flexible team culture with genuine work-life balance.
- Car parking provided.
Employment Criteria
