Job description
About the Company
Immediate publishes some of the UK’s best-known consumer media brands, such as Radio Times, Good Food, and BBC Gardeners’ World magazine. Its trusted content reaches millions every month across digital, print, video, podcasts, apps, and live events. The company focuses on helping audiences get more value, enjoyment, and inspiration from the topics they care about.
Role Overview
The Product Designer will act as a strong advocate for the customer perspective. The role involves researching user needs, designing polished digital experiences, and solving key product pain points through journeys that feel effortless, engaging, and consistent with the brand. The position requires solid UX and UI experience, strong communication, and confident use of testing, insight, and optimisation to improve products throughout the development lifecycle.
You will design for app and web products across Immediate’s portfolio, including Radio Times, Good Food, and History Extra, and help translate customer and business problems into the right design outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Run customer research using a range of methods such as moderated and unmoderated usability testing, surveys, and card sorting.
- Create and refine new features and interactive journeys for mobile applications and web products.
- Shape the design direction for branded apps and websites from a UX viewpoint, working alongside the Lead Product Designer for UX/UI.
- Consider how product design can contribute to long-term value across mobile and web experiences.
- Experiment with interaction patterns and new ideas to improve usability, engagement, and delight.
- Design with customer needs at the centre of decisions.
- Use AI tools within research and design workflows to improve efficiency and support faster ideation.
- Partner with the Lead Product Designer for UX/UI on research planning and execution.
- Work with the Lead Product Designer for Design Systems and other designers to create consistent, seamless experiences across brands, products, missions, and journeys.
- Collaborate with brand teams, product managers, delivery managers, and developers to inform requirement documents, review UX/UI iterations, and align work with roadmap, scope, and timing.
- Track market trends and current best practice in mobile and web interaction design.
- Apply robust UX/UI methods to arrive at high-quality design solutions.
- Maintain high standards in design process, delivery, and overall execution.
- Follow evolving design processes and methodologies.
- Review, test, and rationalise design assets hands-on.
- Work with senior product designers to take high-fidelity work through to development delivery.
- Help maintain consistency with the core mobile app and web UI pattern library in partnership with the design systems lead.
Requirements
- Experience handling the full design cycle, from research and concept development through launch and optimisation, while working with cross-functional teams and agile ways of working.
- Strong practical knowledge of research and testing approaches such as surveys, interviews, and usability testing.
- Ability to explain user journeys and wireframe decisions clearly, including how they support identified customer missions.
- Experience contributing to design thinking workshops.
- Ability to produce strong iterative outputs such as research analysis, user flows, wireframes, and low- and high-fidelity prototypes.
- Prior experience collaborating with developers in an agile environment.
- Comfort using Figma and Jira/Confluence for design and collaboration.
- Awareness of iOS and Android product design considerations.
- Experience with Material Design for mobile.
- Familiarity with using AI in research and design processes.
Benefits
- Up to £53,000 per year.
- Relaxed workplace culture with regular social events, including a summer festival.
- Immediate Community webinars, well-being support, and Mental Health First Aiders.
- 25 days of holiday plus an extra day for your birthday; office closure between Christmas and New Year is additional to annual leave entitlement.
- Training and development support through the Love Learning platform.
- Clear and transparent career progression in a progressive culture.
- Flexible and hybrid working, plus early-finish Fridays.
- Cycle-to-work scheme.
- Enhanced family policies, including paternity, adoption, and surrogacy leave, plus policies for pregnancy loss, fertility, and carers.
- Competitive pension plans and life assurance.
- Access to a newly renovated modern office with collaborative spaces.
