Job description

About the team

The Procurement team sits within the Risk, Finance and Performance group at Christchurch City Council. It provides the structure and guidance needed to ensure procurement across the Council follows best-practice standards and aligns with the organisation’s vision, strategic priorities, and community outcomes. Acting as a shared service, the team supports and enables business units across the Council.

Working in a centre-led way, the team focuses on the quality and delivery of the full procurement and contract management lifecycle. It is a substantial function that helps protect, support, and shape contract management activity across a broad range of Council needs.

About the role

The Procurement Contract Officer role is well suited to someone who is developing a career in procurement and contract management.

This is a varied position where priorities can shift quickly, so the ability to respond promptly and think on your feet is important. You will work with a range of internal and external stakeholders, so building and maintaining strong working relationships will be a key part of the job.

The core purpose of the role is to support Engineers’ Representatives, Procurement and Contracts Leads, and managers with contract management activities. You will help the team complete contract-related tasks, including preparing contract management plans, drafting extension and variation paperwork, coordinating correspondence to keep communication flowing between stakeholders and Council staff, assisting with data preparation for analysis, and using Microsoft and financial systems.

About you

The Council is looking for someone who can help deliver smooth and effective contract management support, with an eye for detail and a willingness to help improve processes where needed.

The team manages a wide mix of contracts, from digital services to infrastructure maintenance, so you need to be adaptable and comfortable working across changing requirements.

Because the role and team can operate in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, a calm, steady and organised approach will be valuable. Experience in the public sector or another regulated environment would be an advantage, along with strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in contract management.

What’s in it for you

  • Access to training programmes, workshops, and ongoing development opportunities
  • Flexible working options, including working from home, adjustable start and finish times, and the option to buy extra leave
  • Exposure to a wider range of Council work through collaboration across the organisation
  • A range of staff benefits, including health-related schemes and retail discounts
