Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role sits at the heart of day-to-day prison operations, helping the establishment run safely and efficiently.

What the job involves

You will work as part of a supportive team carrying out a mix of operational and support duties. Typical tasks include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and observing phone calls and CCTV. The work is active and varied, combining desk-based responsibilities with physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking escorts to vehicles across the prison grounds.

Travel and attendance

Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own vehicle can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work reliably and on time. Please consider the location carefully when planning your commute.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses common sense and good judgement, and works well in a team. It is a fast-paced position that could be a strong starting point for a long-term career.

Working pattern and exposure

You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to support continuous prison operations. Compared with prison officers, your contact with prisoners is limited, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the establishment.

Career development

This role can build valuable knowledge of how a prison functions and may open doors to other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.

Training and progression

The organisation offers training along with progression and development opportunities.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and the Cycle to Work scheme.

If this opportunity matches your skills and interests, you are encouraged to apply.
