Job description
Role overview
HMPPS is hiring an Operational Support Grade for HMP Huntercombe. This is a hands-on, fast-moving role that helps keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The work is varied and combines desk-based tasks with practical duties around the prison estate.
What the role involves
You will support the daily running of the prison by carrying out a mix of security and administrative tasks. Typical duties include checking people and items at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone usage and CCTV. The job also involves physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the site.
Shift pattern and workplace expectations
This position is based on site in North Stoke, England. The role involves a range of shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends, so flexibility is important. Shift start and finish times are fixed, and you are responsible for arriving on time at the prison each day. Because some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not always mandatory unless stated otherwise.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays calm when pressure is high. Good judgement, common sense, and a strong team-oriented mindset are important for success in this role.
Career development
This role offers a chance to build real operational knowledge of how a prison works. It can also open the door to other prison-based roles, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and support for progression and development. The package also includes 25 days of annual leave at the start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Pay
The annual salary for this role is £29,432.
