Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton, where you will help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The work is varied and active, combining desk-based duties with practical tasks such as lifting, carrying, checking deliveries, supervising visitors, monitoring calls and CCTV, and escorting vehicles across the site.
What the role involves
You will be part of a supportive team carrying out a broad range of day-to-day security and support duties. The role may include gate security and searches, handling deliveries, overseeing visitor movement, and keeping an eye on communications and surveillance systems.
Working pattern and travel
This role involves a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, to ensure continuous prison operations. Some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, although it is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated for the post. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave work on time.
About the opportunity
This is a distinctive public service role that supports work aimed at protecting the public and improving lives. Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officer roles, though there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role also gives you a strong understanding of how a prison functions and may open up future progression into other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and development
You will receive training and opportunities to develop your skills and progress within the service.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this post is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Other benefits include access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
No qualifications are required for this role. If you are a strong communicator, calm under pressure, practical in your approach, and a good team player with sound judgement and common sense, this could be a strong career starting point. The post is described as an extraordinary job with the chance to make a real difference through the work carried out in prisons.
