Job description
Role overview
HMP Full Sutton is hiring an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. This role sits within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service and is a practical, hands-on position with a mix of desk-based and physical duties.
You will support the daily running of the establishment through tasks such as gate security and searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV. The work can involve lifting, carrying, walking across the prison grounds, and escorting vehicles.
Working arrangements and travel
This is a shift-based role with fixed start and finish times, so punctual travel to and from the site is essential. The prison is in a rural location where public transport may be limited, so having a driving licence and your own transport may be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless a specific vacancy states otherwise.
Shifts include weekends and nights.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in stressful situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.
Although OSGs have limited contact with prisoners, there may be occasional interaction depending on the prison environment.
Career development
This job offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can open the door to future progression, including opportunities to move into other prison roles and apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432.
Alongside base pay, the role includes structured training and development opportunities, as well as access to several benefits.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave at the start of employment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a funded Level 2 customer service apprenticeship
- Membership of the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
