Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint in Clopton, England. This is a demanding but rewarding public service role with a salary range of £35,746 to £40,003.
Prison officers play a key part in protecting the public while helping people in custody move toward better outcomes. The work is varied, fast-moving, and no two days are the same. As you build experience, you may also have opportunities to broaden your responsibilities and progress within the service.
Who this role suits
There is no single background for this job. People from many different careers and life experiences can be successful here, including those who have worked in parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces. The service looks for strong integrity, self-belief, clear communication, empathy, and the resilience to stay composed in challenging situations.
You will need to be comfortable forming constructive, respectful, and professional relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives. A strong team mindset is essential, because safety for prisoners, colleagues, and the wider prison environment depends on working together as one unit.
What the job involves
This is a multi-faceted role where you may move between several duties in a single shift. At different moments, you may need to act as a problem-solver, mediator, mentor, or guide. The work involves direct interaction with prisoners in a secure environment, with the wider purpose of helping protect the public and supporting rehabilitation.
Training, growth, and benefits
Successful candidates will receive training and access to development opportunities, including the possibility of moving into specialist areas over time. The package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Working pattern
You must be able to work a rotating shift pattern, including weekends.
How to apply
Applicants who feel they match the qualities needed for the role are encouraged to submit an application.
