Role overview
Queensland Government is seeking a Principal Scientist to join the Invasive Plants and Animals Science team in Brisbane. This position leads scientific work aimed at reducing the harm caused by invasive plants to Queensland’s economy, environment and community wellbeing. The role combines leadership, stakeholder engagement, technical advice and research delivery to support biosecurity outcomes across the state.
In this role, you will help shape the direction of the science program, guide a team, and work alongside a wide range of partners to improve weed and pest animal management. You will also contribute specialist knowledge on weed control and manage both a personal research portfolio and team-based research activity.
About the program
Biosecurity Queensland works with partners to protect Queensland’s way of life, natural environment, biodiversity, health, industries and economy from plant and animal pest and disease threats. The Invasive Plants and Animals program focuses on strategic action to reduce the impact of invasive species across Queensland.
Key duties
- Provide senior scientific leadership within the Invasive Plants and Animals program and represent the program in meetings, working groups and stakeholder forums.
- Develop and maintain trusted partnerships with stakeholders and collaborative research partners to strengthen invasive species management outcomes.
- Support a positive, safe and high-performing team environment that encourages quality research and builds team capability.
- Guide the strategic direction of the science group so that research priorities for weed and pest animal management are met.
- Apply technical expertise to provide practical advice on managing a range of weeds affecting Queensland.
- Oversee a personal research program and lead a research team, including project review, budgeting, staff management and advice to senior leaders.
Mandatory requirements
- An Australian Bachelor degree at AQF level 7 or above, or an equivalent qualification, in Science, Applied Science or Environmental Science from a recognised tertiary institution.
- A current C-class driver’s licence.
- Physical capacity to carry out fieldwork in remote locations, often in hot and humid conditions, and to drive for long periods.
