Principal Data Engineer

Role Overview

As Principal Data Engineer at NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi), you will lead and influence the future of data engineering by providing strategic technical leadership across data platforms, governance, and delivery throughout the enterprise. This full-time, permanent role is situated on-site and can be based at any NZTA office location in New Zealand.

Key Responsibilities

• Drive enterprise-wide technical leadership for data engineering, shaping policies and implementation strategies.
• Mentor and nurture aspiring data engineers to grow organisational capability and talent.
• Lead the Data Community of Practice fostering knowledge sharing and innovation across teams and partners.
• Support high-impact programmes with trusted technical direction and guidance on complex data solutions.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in modern data platforms, especially Databricks and Lakehouse architectures, with strategic vision and organizational influence. You will excel in leading large-scale data engineering initiatives and mentoring specialists, influencing senior leaders to make informed data-related decisions.

Required Experience and Skills

• Extensive leadership of enterprise-scale data engineering projects.
• Proven track record in mentoring technical professionals and building engineering capabilities.
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders with trusted technical advice.
• Experience with Databricks, cloud-based data platforms, and Lakehouse architecture.
• Expertise in developing solutions for analytics, AI, machine learning, and business intelligence.
• Strong grasp of data governance, privacy, security, and compliance considerations.
• Proficiency in SQL and programming languages such as Python, Scala, or R.
• Balancing delivery success with sustainable platform maintenance and mitigation of technical debt.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
