About the Role
Long Beach City College is hiring qualified instructors to provide employer-sponsored homeland security training for staff at the Port of Long Beach. The assignment focuses on workforce development in areas such as homeland security, intelligence analysis, transportation security, border security, emergency preparedness, and related safety and security subjects.
The instructor will lead practical, engaging learning sessions for adult participants in classroom, online, or workplace environments. The exact assignment may change based on employer requirements, the instructor’s background, and the training calendar.
Training Topics
- Core homeland security concepts, agencies, vocabulary, and operational practices
- Federal, state, and international laws that affect homeland security work
- Major threats and risk awareness
- Intelligence analysis and its role in security operations
- Terrorism, human-caused incidents, and natural disasters
- National defense and weaknesses in the private sector
- Security for transportation systems and borders
- Protection for ports, maritime operations, aviation, rail, trucking, pipelines, and public transit
- Use of detection technologies and related legal, economic, political, and cultural factors
Duties
The instructor is expected to deliver tailored training that matches employer goals, contract education expectations, approved course outlines, and learning outcomes. Responsibilities may include lesson planning, adapting materials for working adults, facilitating instruction in person or online, guiding discussions and case studies, assessing learner progress, and supporting a professional classroom climate.
Instructional methods may involve lectures, group discussion, case analysis, scenario-based exercises, applied security examples, and assignments tied to workforce needs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a mix of education, training, and professional experience in homeland security, intelligence analysis, transportation security, border security, emergency management, public safety, criminal justice, port security, or a closely related area.
Desirable Background
- Previous experience in teaching, training, workforce development, public safety, military service, law enforcement, emergency management, or professional development
- A relevant degree, certification, license, or industry credential
- Experience designing or delivering training for employers or incumbent workers
- Ability to create applied case studies, scenario-driven lessons, or professional training materials
- Background in homeland security, intelligence analysis, transportation security, border security, port operations, maritime security, emergency preparedness, or public safety instruction
