About the University

Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland is recognized as New Zealand's premier university, dedicated to generating globally impactful advancements through its excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, and collaborative initiatives. It is inspired by its unique standing in Aotearoa New Zealand and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

Job Description

An exciting opportunity exists for a Portfolio Lead to join the research project team at the University of Auckland. In collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI), the Portfolio Lead will ensure adherence to post-award compliance with both institutional and funding body regulations. Given the University's varied roles in Horizon Europe projects, the Portfolio Lead will coordinate with consortium members to guarantee the punctual fulfillment of contractual commitments.

The Portfolio Lead will be responsible for the administrative, financial, and legal oversight of Horizon Europe-funded projects. This includes ensuring the University upholds its commitments under the Grant Agreement and Consortium Agreement. Key duties involve budget monitoring, including fund allocation and transfers, expenditure tracking, and the preparation of internal financial reports. The role also requires coordinating the compilation and submission of financial reports, working closely with the OneFinance Team to meet European Commission deadlines, and ensuring all expense justification documents are properly defined and archived by each partner to prepare for potential audits.

Beyond the post-award management of Horizon Europe contracts, the Portfolio Lead will enhance the capacity of Research Services to support these projects. This involves developing and implementing internal resources such as procedures, guidelines, templates, and collaborative platforms, conducting training and information sessions, and providing ongoing peer support to the University's research support teams.

This is a full-time position, requiring 37.5 hours per week, offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months. The salary range is Band G, from $87,000 to $107,500 per annum, commensurate with skills and experience. Further details are available in the Position Description.

About You

The ideal candidate will possess excellent working knowledge of administrative and financial management, with at least five years of experience managing European or international projects. A solid understanding of the European Commission's management rules for the Horizon Europe framework programme is essential. Proficiency in research management systems and processes within a university or similar research-intensive organization is required, along with advanced Excel skills for data analysis and pivot table usage. Strong teamwork capabilities, particularly in multicultural and multidisciplinary settings, are crucial. Excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a proven ability to identify and resolve complex issues are also necessary. A commitment to developing others through training, knowledge sharing, and coaching is highly valued.

About the Team

This role is a collaborative position between the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) and Research Operations, Ethics & Integrity (RIO), with the position embedded within ABI. The Portfolio Lead will report to the Senior Manager – Research Services Improvement and will work closely with both RIO and the ABI Research Services team, acting as a liaison between central research support and institute-level delivery. ABI is a globally recognized research institute focused on pioneering bioengineering solutions, fostering a collaborative, collegial, and inclusive environment for engineers, scientists, clinicians, and technologists. The Institute maintains strong ties with academia, industry, and government, driven by research excellence and real-world impact.
