Job description
Role Overview
The Police Detective works under the guidance of the Investigations Division Sergeant and carries out detailed criminal investigations, crime prevention duties, and enforcement of state and local laws and ordinances. This position also supports field supervision at crime scenes, handles investigative follow-up, and completes administrative work aligned with the direction of the Chief of Police.
Position Characteristics
This role is part of the investigative function and includes administrative responsibilities as well. The incumbent may be asked to supervise investigators during criminal cases and is expected to handle both routine and complex investigative assignments.
Key Duties
- Respond quickly to active incidents that require immediate law enforcement support.
- Investigate criminal matters and special cases, including domestic violence, burglary, theft, robbery, assault, and homicide.
- Enforce city, county, and state laws while managing investigative casework.
- Prepare case files for the District Attorney and present evidence in court when needed.
- Coordinate with the supervisor on case progress, obstacles, and next steps.
- Lead and oversee crime scene investigations.
- Maintain accurate records for all assigned investigations.
- Support other police department functions when assigned to do so.
- Assist fellow detectives with follow-up work, evidence collection, witness interviews, and suspect apprehension.
- Help prepare reports and court materials for trial appearances and testimony.
- Promote the mission, goals, and values of the City of Kings Mountain Police Department.
- Provide status updates and guidance to victims and the public regarding case processes.
- Review reports from officers and other detectives to ensure they are complete.
- Contribute to in-service training and provide input for performance evaluations of rotational detectives.
- Participate in an on-call rotation with other detectives.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Needed
The role requires strong knowledge of police methods, crime prevention, criminal law, evidence handling, investigative techniques, court decisions related to arrest and search procedures, community policing, supervision, training, and firearm safety.
Physical Requirements
The detective must meet police and safety standards, including strong vision for driving under emergency conditions, identifying people, using firearms, and spotting hazards; effective hearing and speaking for radio, phone, and face-to-face communication in noisy situations; rapid physical movement and endurance for pursuing and restraining combative suspects; manual dexterity for writing, using safety equipment, and driving; the ability to recognize hazardous odors; and the strength to lift equipment as needed.
Experience and Education
Candidates should have at least three years of law enforcement experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and completion of BLET training and certification.
License Requirement
A valid North Carolina driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be kept active throughout employment.
Compensation
The hiring range for this position is $46,721 to $58,401. Placement within that range depends on qualifications, education, certifications, and relevant experience.
