Job description

Overview

The City of Chilliwack is hiring a Planning Assistant for a time-limited full-time role in the Planning Department. In this position, you will support both office and field-based planning work, help keep departmental processes running smoothly, and deliver professional service to the public while handling confidential municipal planning information responsibly.

What you will do

  • Help coordinate planning documents, applications, maps, notices, and tracking records.
  • Support front-counter, phone, and email enquiries from the public about planning and development.
  • Assist with reviewing, researching, and processing planning applications and proposals.
  • Provide technical support for planning-related functions.
  • Support business licence and building permit review activities.
  • Assist with bylaw compliance work, including site visits when required.
  • Prepare straightforward correspondence and carry out other related duties as assigned.

Working conditions

This role normally follows a Monday-to-Friday schedule during standard working hours, with overtime only when authorized. Occasional travel may be required for job duties. On hire, union dues will be deducted in line with the Collective Agreement.

Education and experience

You should have a two-year diploma in Geography or Planning, along with experience in local government or planning-related work. An equivalent mix of education and relevant experience may also be considered.

Knowledge and skills

The position calls for practical knowledge of planning, land development, and development-industry processes, along with strong coordination, organization, computer, and customer service abilities. Familiarity with mapping, graphics, development plans, site plans, and property-based information is also important.

Additional requirements

You must be able to work effectively with Planning Department staff, build and maintain positive working relationships, manage multiple priorities under pressure, and maintain a high level of accuracy. You should also be tactful, courteous, and diplomatic when dealing with the public, including challenging situations. A valid B.C. Driver’s Licence is required, or you must be able to obtain one.

Compensation

The pay rate is $44.87 per hour based on the 2026 rate. This is a temporary full-time position.
