Job description

Job summary

The Planner/Scheduler will create, manage, and continuously refine project programmes so construction work is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standard. The role works closely with project teams, subcontractors, and clients to improve scheduling efficiency, allocate resources effectively, and reduce the risk of delays.

Key activities

  • Prepare clear and accurate tender-stage construction programmes and supporting narrative documents, working to demanding deadlines alongside the estimating team.
  • Apply a solid understanding of programme obligations under Public Works and RIAI contract arrangements.
  • Build and update detailed construction schedules using standard planning tools such as MS Project and Primavera P6, with Asta Powerproject considered an advantage. Break project scope into practical work packages and activities that align with project goals and deliverables.
  • Monitor progress against the approved baseline, keep schedule data accurate and transparent, and highlight deviations from plan, including critical path analysis.
  • Work with project managers, site teams, and subcontractors to collect and confirm programme information. Lead regular progress discussions with stakeholders to review timelines, deal with slippage, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Spot scheduling risks early and put mitigation measures in place to limit their impact on project delivery. Assess how scope changes, delays, and unexpected issues affect timelines and budgets.
  • Produce and present reports such as Gantt charts, S-curves, and project dashboards for stakeholders. Communicate key schedule indicators, updates, and forecasts clearly to project teams and clients.
  • Contribute to better planning and scheduling practices by supporting the adoption of improved methods. Take part in lessons-learned reviews and share feedback to help improve future project outcomes.

Competencies

  • Hands-on experience with planning software such as Primavera P6, MS Project, and Asta Powerproject.
  • Good knowledge of Irish construction methods, sequencing, and resource planning.
  • Understanding of core project management concepts, including critical path method and earned value analysis.
  • Ability to interpret complex information and identify patterns, constraints, and improvement opportunities.
  • High attention to detail and a strong focus on schedule and report accuracy.
  • Confident written and verbal communication skills for working with a range of stakeholders.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Proactive attitude toward resolving planning conflicts and programme delays.
  • Adaptable approach suited to busy, fast-moving construction environments.

Education and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Project Management, or a closely related discipline.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of planning and scheduling experience in the construction sector.
  • Experience on medium to large construction projects.
  • Familiarity with Irish construction regulations, standards, and established best practices.

Benefits

  • 21 days of annual leave, with extra days earned through long service.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Company vehicle for site visits and travel.
  • Laptop and mobile phone provided.
  • Company sick pay scheme.
  • Statutory and enhanced maternity and paternity pay.
  • Wedding leave.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • Training and development support, including CPD and instructor training.
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) offering confidential support.
  • Regular company social events and wellbeing activities.
