Job description

Role overview

SPECTRAFORCE is hiring a part-time Patient Interview Moderator for a fully remote assignment based in Canada. This engagement runs for 12+ months and focuses on patient-centered qualitative research within the Patient Centered Solutions (PCS) team.

The PCS team specializes in measuring the patient experience through scientifically rigorous research. Its work combines strategic consulting and technical scientific expertise to bring the patient perspective into the development and commercialization of new medicines. Research methods may include qualitative work such as patient interviews and focus groups, quantitative approaches such as clinical outcome assessments and patient-reported outcomes, preference research, and passive methods such as digital health technology tools to better understand the experiences and expectations of patients, caregivers, and physicians.

What the role involves

This is a flexible, part-time position supporting qualitative research projects. The moderator will conduct one-to-one interviews in English with patients and, at times, healthcare professionals. Sessions will be scheduled around participant availability across different geographies and time zones, so the role requires flexibility in working hours, including occasional early-morning or evening interviews.

The right candidate will be a skilled qualitative researcher who can work empathetically and professionally, draw out authentic patient perspectives, and adapt easily in a project-based environment while balancing study objectives with participant needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Run in-depth one-to-one interviews with patients, mainly those living with acute or chronic health conditions.
  • Use semi-structured discussion guides while adjusting the conversation in real time to follow new insights and patient stories.
  • Moderate qualitative interviews using methods such as concept elicitation, cognitive debriefing of patient-reported outcome questionnaires, meaningful-change or exit interviews, and patient experience or preference research.
  • Build trust quickly and create a respectful, supportive setting for discussions that may involve sensitive health-related experiences.
  • Use strong probing and active listening skills to understand perceptions, language, and the deeper meaning behind responses.
  • Check that questionnaire items are understood correctly, including their relevance and interpretation during cognitive debriefing.
  • Balance structure and flexibility so interviews stay aligned to the protocol while still capturing rich detail.
  • Watch for verbal and non-verbal cues that may signal confusion, emotional reactions, or unmet needs.
  • Handle sensitive or complex conversations with professionalism, neutrality, and ethical judgment.
  • Document, record, and summarize interview findings accurately so the outputs are ready for analysis and reporting.
  • Work with research teams on interview guide development, refinement, and identification of emerging themes and information gaps.
  • Follow regulatory, ethical, and data privacy expectations, including informed consent and GDPR.
  • Help deliver high-quality patient-centered evidence that supports clinical, regulatory, and commercial decisions.

Experience and qualifications

Applicants should have hands-on experience conducting qualitative patient interviews, ideally in healthcare, life sciences, or clinical research. Experience moderating in-depth one-to-one interviews with patients or healthcare stakeholders is required, along with comfort using semi-structured guides and adapting the interview path dynamically.

Background in one or more of the following areas is preferred: cognitive debriefing or linguistic validation of PROs or COAs, concept elicitation, patient experience research, outcomes research, Patient-Focused Drug Development, or similar work. Candidates should also bring a strong understanding of qualitative research methods, familiarity with clinical terminology, and the ability to quickly understand a disease area.

The ideal candidate is empathetic, neutral, non-judgmental, highly organized, and able to manage several interviews or projects at the same time. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, including the ability to turn complex patient narratives into clear insights. Prior remote interviewing experience using video or telephone platforms is also needed. A bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field such as psychology, health sciences, sociology, anthropology, or public health is required.

Work style

This role calls for excellent flexibility, especially because interview times may vary across time zones. Success in the position depends on the ability to maintain professionalism, work independently in a remote environment, and adapt to project demands while keeping the patient voice at the center of the research process.
