Job overview
This role supports the department manager in achieving the department’s sales and profit targets. The associate works overnight to replenish merchandise across the store, helping keep shelves full and standards consistent. The position also focuses on building customer loyalty by maintaining reliable operating conditions, offering fresh-looking products, and delivering friendly, informed, and timely service. Key duties
- Help create a store environment where customers feel welcomed, valued, and encouraged to return.
- Make sure the department is set up according to merchandising plans and that shelf availability, freshness, product rotation, inventory levels, shelf tags, signage, ordering, and cooler/freezer conditions meet company expectations.
- Assist shoppers by locating items or suggesting suitable alternatives.
- Build trust and cooperation among teammates by sharing information, working collaboratively, and supporting teamwork.
- Follow all company rules as well as applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
- Monitor stock and inventory conditions, report shortages or discrepancies, and check product quality and freshness before taking action as needed.
- Keep products at safe temperatures in line with food safety rules and maintain required temperature logs.
- Maintain strong standards in food handling, sanitation, safety, and productivity.
- Comply with food safety, USDA, COOL, and Department of Agriculture regulations.
- Carry out product recalls and withdrawals promptly, ensuring affected items are secured and removed from customer access.
- Support safety programs by following procedures, spotting unsafe conditions, and reporting them to store management.
- Notify management about customer or employee accidents, safety concerns, and any illegal activity such as robbery, theft, or fraud.
- Observe wage-and-hour policies and regulations.
- Promote a safe working culture, ensure safety training is completed, make sure hazard assessments are available for reference, and verify that protective equipment is provided and used when required.
- Check that equipment remains in usable condition and report or help correct safety hazards, including lockout/tagout procedures when needed.
- Perform additional job-related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements
Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, and English is the preferred language. The role calls for 0 to 3 years of relevant supervisory experience. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, have authorization to work in the United States or be able to obtain it, and be able to pass pre-employment drug testing and a background check. Strong customer service ability is essential, along with excellent interpersonal, motivational, and communication skills.
Working conditions
This is a retail role with heavy physical demands. The job involves standing or walking on different floor surfaces, using manual dexterity, speaking, seeing, hearing, smelling, and repeating movements with hands and/or feet. It also requires frequent reaching at waist level or overhead, and carrying, pushing, or lifting loads up to the stated limits. Occasional activities include sitting, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and climbing up to 30 feet.
Work may take place indoors or outdoors and in cold, frozen, heated, wet, or humid environments. Safety risks can include twisting of the back or neck, walking on slippery or cluttered surfaces, working around hazardous equipment, and exposure to sharp objects. Less frequent exposures may include loud noise, skin irritants, dust, fumes, sprays, hazardous cleaning agents, and other toxins.
Equipment and physical requirements
The role uses cleaning supplies and equipment, general office equipment, a register, pricing gun, scales, scanner, and material-handling tools such as racks, carts, pallet jacks, and shopping carts. Preferred tools include a baler/compactor and box cutter. Required protective equipment includes goggles, gloves, and a back brace. Pulling may involve up to 250 lbs, and lifting may involve up to 50 lbs.
Schedule and travel
Travel is occasional. Overnight travel is not required. Shifts are varied.
