Job description

Company Overview

Feeding San Diego is a nonprofit organization focused on reducing hunger by rescuing surplus food and turning it into nutritious meals for people in San Diego County. Founded in 2007, it partners with food donors and is the region’s only Feeding America-affiliated food bank.

The organization values a workforce that reflects the diversity of the county it serves. Candidates with lived experience related to poverty or food insecurity, as well as people from marginalized communities, are especially encouraged to apply.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations, this position is responsible for overseeing and improving the full order fulfillment cycle, from order intake through final delivery. The manager will make sure agency orders are processed accurately, delivered on schedule, and handled with a strong focus on quality, service, safety, and food safety compliance. The role also includes leading the fulfillment team, coordinating with other departments, and supporting the organization’s mission.

Core Responsibilities

The role covers the full fulfillment workflow, including order entry, picking, packing, staging, and delivery. It also involves refining processes to improve speed, accuracy, and consistency, while making sure orders meet organizational standards.

This role includes direct people management: coaching Assistant Managers, Coordinators, and team members, running performance reviews, and building a positive, collaborative workplace culture.

Quality oversight is a major part of the job, including setting up checks to maintain order accuracy and product quality, resolving complaints or discrepancies, and tracking performance measures such as fulfillment speed, accuracy, and service levels.

The manager will oversee the use of Ceres, scanners, and related tools to keep operations efficient and accurate, while partnering with IT and operations teams to fix system issues and support improvements.

Additional duties include identifying opportunities to reduce cost and improve workflow, staying current on logistics and fulfillment best practices, working across departments on planning and forecasting, and making sure policies, safety rules, and compliance requirements are followed.

The position also requires reporting on fulfillment metrics, inventory, and team performance, offering data-based recommendations to leadership, and helping manage the department budget.

Work Relationships

This role works closely with the operations team and regularly communicates with donors, potential donors, people facing hunger, volunteers, agency representatives, and other community members.

Qualifications

A preferred background includes an associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with coursework in Business Management, Social Services, Receiving & Distribution Services, or a similar field.

The position calls for at least 5 years of experience in order fulfillment, warehouse operations, logistics, food distribution programs, or a comparable setting, plus at least 2 years in a leadership or management role.

Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate should be comfortable using order management systems, ERP tools, and Microsoft Office. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, communication, problem-solving, organization, customer focus, and continuous improvement skills are all important for success in this role.

Tools and Equipment

Work in this role may involve a stand-up forklift, pallet jack, dolly, scissor lift, computer, 10-key adding machine, multiline phone, copier, and printer.

Licensing and Transportation

The candidate must have reliable transportation and hold a valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record. Proof of personal vehicle insurance and insurability under the agency’s carrier standards is also required.

The employee must be able to earn and keep forklift and electric pallet jack certification; training will be provided.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

This job is performed in a warehouse setting that may involve dust and pollen exposure at times, along with work in cooler and freezer environments.

The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, maintaining balance, sitting for long periods, and using the hands, arms, and legs for dexterity. The employee must regularly lift, carry, and balance items weighing up to 50 pounds, and may need to push or pull supplies and file drawers. Noise levels in the workplace are moderate.

Equal Opportunity Statement

Feeding San Diego provides equal employment opportunities and does not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability, genetics, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other legally protected characteristic.

Schedule and Pay

The salary range for this role is $70,000 to $80,000 per year. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

Benefits and Perks

Benefits include employer-sponsored platinum-level medical coverage, a 401(k) plan with company matching, a flexible work environment, a welcoming office, time-off policies that include vacation, sick leave, and company holidays, and 20 days of PTO accrued in the first year.

Employees also have access to learning and development opportunities, recognition programs, a meaningful mission that supports San Diego County, a supportive Board of Directors, a collaborative and upbeat team culture, and a workplace committed to sustainability and food rescue.
