Job description
Role overview
This position is based in a children’s home in Westcliff-On-Sea and focuses on providing overnight support to children and young people. Compass Community describes its approach as therapeutic and innovative, with children placed at the centre of everything it does. The organisation’s values are built around integrity, courage, and care, alongside open communication, mutual challenge, and continual improvement.
The role suits experienced residential workers or youth workers, and it is also open to people without prior experience who want to build a career in residential care. The employer is seeking committed, empathetic, and reflective people who can become consistent and meaningful adults in children’s lives.
Key duties
- Support the care and day-to-day wellbeing of children and young people during the night, using your existing strengths and the training provided.
- Work within a therapeutic care model and continue developing specialist skills through reflective practice and ongoing learning.
- Build warm, positive relationships with children while meeting their needs and maintaining their safety at all times.
- Support young people who may need significant supervision and additional help.
What makes this environment different
- The homes are designed to feel welcoming and homely, with strong investment in decoration and upkeep so children can feel secure and express themselves.
- Homes are funded with generous budgets, enabling children to enjoy holidays, leisure activities, and special occasions.
- Therapeutic work is embedded into daily practice, with support informed by leading psychologists and specific training for staff.
- A bespoke incident reporting system is used to reduce repetitive administration and allow more time to be spent directly with children.
- New starters receive a structured induction called Skills to Care, which includes two separate classroom-based training weeks and one week of shadow shifts.
Eligibility and recruitment conditions
Applicants must be at least 22 years old because of children’s home regulations and must hold a valid driving licence. The hiring process includes robust vetting, reference checks, and an enhanced DBS check. A strict code of conduct applies, and applicants must be prepared to follow safer recruitment standards throughout the process.
Equal opportunity statement
Compass Community states that it is an equal-opportunity employer and is committed to creating an inclusive workplace with a diverse workforce. As the organisation grows, it aims to employ people with a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, viewpoints, and experiences to better support children and young people.
