Job description
About the company
SYOS Aerospace is a rapidly expanding global robotics and aerospace business working on advanced uncrewed vehicles for air, land, and sea. Its technology is developed for dual-use applications, with a strong focus on innovation and delivering products that surpass customer expectations.
About the role
The Mechatronics and Electrical Team Lead will oversee a multidisciplinary group responsible for designing and delivering sophisticated mechatronic and electrical subsystems for next-generation autonomous vehicles. This role partners closely with mechanical, software, and leadership teams to convert ambitious concepts into practical, field-ready systems.
Key responsibilities
Lead the architecture, design, and integration of electrical systems, power electronics, control systems, and embedded hardware for autonomous platforms. Manage and coach a cross-functional team of electrical and mechatronics engineers while encouraging initiative, innovation, and strong ownership. Organise and track team output across several projects to deliver high-quality work on schedule. Support rapid prototyping and bench-level troubleshooting of electromechanical subsystems. Collaborate with software, mechanical, and flight teams to achieve smooth systems integration. Improve engineering practices around design, documentation, testing, and validation. Make sure electrical systems meet applicable safety standards, aerospace and military requirements, and EMC guidelines.
Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline. You should bring at least 5 years of practical experience in mechatronic or electrical systems design, along with 2 or more years in a technical leadership or team lead position. Strong knowledge of embedded systems, PCB design, control systems, and actuators/sensors is essential. Experience using Altium, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar tools is expected. A background in power management, motor control for brushed and brushless systems, and UAV or robotics platforms will be valuable. The role suits someone comfortable in a startup-style environment that is fast-moving, agile, and solutions-focused. Clear communication and strong stakeholder engagement skills are also important.
Nice to have
Experience with autonomous vehicles, UAVs, or robotics would be a strong advantage. Familiarity with DFMEA, HALT testing, aerospace standards, FPGA design, high-voltage systems, or battery management systems would also be beneficial.
Location
This is an office-based position in Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The area is known for its surf beaches, lively atmosphere, and growing technology community.
