Job description

Role overview

As a Closures Sealing Engineer, you will take full engineering responsibility for complete static and dynamic sealing systems, along with Daylight Opening (DLO) trims, for Tesla vehicles. The position centers on current vehicle programs with a strong focus on improving quality, lowering cost, and enhancing manufacturability. You will also contribute to the design and engineering of seals and DLO trims for future vehicle programs.

The role involves guiding both virtual CAE validation and physical testing to confirm that concepts perform as intended from early design through production. It offers broad exposure across vehicle development and requires close collaboration with teams in body, closures, electrical/firmware, exterior, interior, and manufacturing engineering to create high-quality sealing solutions and robust assembly processes.

Key work areas

  • Support the Vehicle Engineering team on closure-system sealing and DLO trim development.
  • Create detailed specification drawings for elastomeric seal designs.
  • Launch CAE studies for seals, evaluate the results, and refine geometry and materials until targets are met.
  • Choose suitable materials for static and dynamic elastomeric seals as well as DLO trims.
  • Work with manufacturing processes for elastomeric seals, TP and metallic trims, and their assembly.
  • Drive sealing and trim solutions that balance appearance, function, quality, cost, and weight.
  • Define system architecture and functionality using market research, feasibility assessments, prototyping, component specifications, and related technical documentation.
  • Collaborate iteratively with Tesla’s design and styling studio to achieve the best balance of form, function, and quality.
  • Review and develop tolerance analysis, CAE, DFM, DFMEA, and PFMEA outputs, then fold findings into product designs.
  • Coordinate with internal and external suppliers to support development milestones and prototype as well as production build events.

What the role requires

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience demonstrating exceptional capability.
  • At least 3 years of experience designing and engineering static and dynamic seals or exterior trims.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Ability to interpret FEA results and apply recommendations to product design.
  • Hands-on experience creating improved or entirely new seal and trim components with design software.
  • Proficiency in V5/3DX CAD tools for 2D sectioning and 3D seal geometry development; experience with complex seal mold design is an advantage.
  • A proven record of taking seal and trim programs from concept through production.
  • Experience working with supply chain partners on new seal and trim development.
  • A proactive mindset for improving processes and advancing projects, supported by examples of initiative.
  • Strong communication, resourcefulness, and time-management skills.
