Job description
Role Overview
The Marketplace Experience (MPX) Designer sits within the Creative Studio as an individual contributor at P3 level. This role focuses on shaping customer-first marketplace experiences by combining 2D and 3D design methods to turn brand, campaign, and product narratives into physical spaces. The work spans retail stores, wholesale settings, shop-in-shops, trade show booths, and event-based activations.
In this role, you’ll balance spatial thinking, brand systems, and practical production constraints to produce solutions that are clear, scalable, and execution-ready. You’ll work with increasing independence, developing experiences across physical environments while solving moderately complex problems, often without a clear precedent. Success in this position depends on strong collaboration, precise communication, and the ability to align design intent with cross-functional teams.
What You’ll Do
- Create seasonal campaign experiences for retail and wholesale settings, including window displays, in-store storytelling, and product education moments.
- Convert brand and campaign ideas into engaging physical environments that help customers navigate and understand the space.
- Develop integrated 2D and 3D design solutions such as signage, graphics, spatial plans, and environmental storytelling components.
- Strengthen brand storytelling through thoughtful typography, layout, and visual hierarchy across every customer touchpoint.
- Build repeatable toolkits, templates, and guidelines that support consistent rollout across regions, store formats, and partner teams.
- Apply systems thinking to make design solutions adaptable, efficient, and simple to implement.
- Support evergreen and always-on brand messaging while keeping in-store communication consistent and easy to understand.
- Design experiences for retail events, store launches, and community-focused activations, including localized and custom storytelling.
- Work closely with partners across Retail, Wholesale, Visual Merchandising, Marketing, Creative, Production, and external vendors.
- Help align physical and digital touchpoints so the overall omnichannel experience feels connected.
- Contribute to the improvement of marketplace design systems, workflows, and documentation such as guides, playbooks, and frameworks.
- Prepare production-ready assets in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, and collaborate with production teams to confirm feasibility and quality.
- Handle several projects at once while balancing priorities, timelines, and standards of excellence.
- Make sure all output reflects Patagonia’s values, brand standards, and commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
Who You Are
- You design with the customer experience in mind and care about how physical spaces shape storytelling.
- You collaborate well, build trust quickly, and work effectively with internal partners and outside vendors.
- You communicate clearly and can explain concepts, decisions, and trade-offs in a way that creates alignment.
- You think in systems and naturally look for ways to create consistency and scale.
- You are comfortable working independently and making progress in ambiguous situations with limited direction.
- You approach challenges with practical creativity, using good judgment to work through constraints.
- You stay organized, pay attention to detail, and manage multiple priorities without losing quality.
- You welcome feedback and contribute to a culture of shared ownership and ongoing improvement.
- You connect with Patagonia’s mission and bring care to work that supports environmental and social responsibility.
Experience You Bring
- At least 5 years of professional design experience in retail, environmental, brand, or experiential design.
- Advanced skill in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
- Working familiarity with 3D tools such as SketchUp or comparable software.
- Strong 2D graphic design foundation with practical understanding of spatial and 3D design principles.
- Experience designing for physical environments such as stores, events, or exhibitions.
- Proven ability to build scalable systems, toolkits, templates, and frameworks that support consistent implementation.
- Strong grasp of brand storytelling, especially typography, layout, and visual hierarchy.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and external production or fabrication partners.
- Helpful knowledge of materials, fabrication, and production workflows.
- Solid project management ability, including managing multiple projects and deadlines at the same time.
