Job description
Position Overview
The County of Brant is seeking a Litigation Clerk to support the Solicitor & Corporate Counsel, the Assistant County Solicitor, and other members of the Legal Division. This position is based initially at the Burford Administration Office and reports to the Solicitor & Corporate Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Law Clerk diploma, or an equivalent mix of education and practical experience.
- Two to three years of relevant administrative and clerking experience in a legal setting, ideally with exposure to litigation and/or municipal law.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet and email, along with Smart Sheets.
- Self-directed, proactive, and able to take initiative.
- Strong analytical thinking, research ability, organization, and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with applicable legislation such as the Municipal Act, Planning Act, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Ontario Land Tribunal Act, and similar statutes.
- A solid understanding of confidentiality requirements in a legal department, with sound judgment and discretion.
- Proven ability to stay professional and productive under pressure, including during urgent situations and tight deadlines.
- Capacity to recognize issues, solve problems, and support continuous improvement efforts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, along with strong customer service skills.
- Highly organized with strong file management capability.
- Strong keyboarding, data entry, proofreading, and grammar/punctuation editing skills.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, highly regulated team environment.
- Must provide an acceptable police records check and be able to travel throughout the County as needed.
Preferred Assets
- Experience in, or knowledge of, how a law office operates in a government environment.
- Familiarity with court and tribunal processes, particularly the Ontario Land Tribunal and Ontario Court of Justice (Provincial Offences).
- General understanding of court procedure, including the Rules of Civil Procedure.
Key Duties
- Deliver legal administrative and clerking support to the Solicitor & Corporate Counsel, the Assistant County Solicitor, and others in the Legal Division.
- Set up and maintain litigation and legal files, track the progress of cases and charges, keep legal staff informed, perform corporate searches, request files from departments, and help move files toward closure.
- Prepare and submit basic court documents, as well as exhibits and document briefs such as evidence and case law for court and tribunal proceedings.
- Support insurance-related matters by staying in touch with claimants and preparing releases.
- Draft and review reports, letters, memoranda, and other legal correspondence under supervision; coordinate with County departments to gather documents; and oversee public outreach related to real estate notices.
- Carry out research in relevant subject areas as requested by legal counsel.
- Communicate with external parties such as opposing counsel, court registrars, case coordinators, members of the public, consultants, and experts.
- Handle basic accounting tasks, including approvals for credit cards, mileage, conferences or training, insurance invoices, and similar items.
- Manage and review legal subscriptions such as Westlaw, BLA, and Law Society resources.
- Review and improve the current working file management system, and maintain a tracking system for outstanding items while following up on pending matters.
- Maintain legal and division calendars, schedule meetings, and prepare supporting materials.
- Perform other administrative tasks as assigned.
Work Details
This is a full-time position with a schedule of 35 hours per week. The annual salary range is $70,816 to $82,846. The job grade is 5 and is under review.
