Job description

Role overview

Join Auckland Council’s Pool and Leisure Centres as a Lifeguard at the Birkenhead facility. This role focuses on creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for every visitor while supporting the broader goal of helping more Aucklanders stay active more often.

You’ll be part of a dynamic team where each day offers variety, customer interaction, and the chance to make a positive difference in the community.

What you will do

In this position, you will monitor pool activity, support visitor safety, and help maintain a clean and inviting aquatic environment. You will also communicate pool rules clearly, interact positively with customers, and respond quickly and appropriately when first aid support is needed.

The role suits someone who is attentive, calm under pressure, and genuinely service-oriented.

Swimming assessment requirements

To be considered, you must be able to demonstrate strong swimming ability as part of the selection process. The assessment includes:

  • Swimming 200 metres in under 6 minutes
  • Swimming 25 metres using sidestroke
  • Swimming 50 metres using breaststroke
  • Retrieving an object from the bottom of the pool
  • Treading water for 5 minutes

About you

The ideal candidate brings reliable customer service experience, good communication and administration skills, and a high level of maturity and dependability. Because the position works on a variable roster, you will also need access to dependable transport.

Training requirement

You will need to attend training at West Wave from Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm, between 6 July 2026 and 17 July 2026.

What we offer

Working for Auckland Council gives you access to strong development opportunities, a supportive environment, and a range of benefits. You will also receive free use of centre facilities and access to recreational equipment. The organisation places emphasis on wellbeing, flexible working conditions, and continuous improvement.

Auckland Council also highlights its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with recognition through GenderTick and participation in the Pride Pledge.

Additional information

This role is officially titled Team Member. The hourly pay rate is NZD 28.95. Applications close on 21 June 2026.

This position is classified as a Children's Worker role under the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. As a result, successful applicants must complete police vetting before starting work. The role is also safety-sensitive and requires pre-employment drug testing. Employment will depend on a satisfactory police check.

Auckland Council is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds. If you have any access or support needs, you are encouraged to share them during the application process so appropriate assistance can be provided.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
