Role Summary
The Lab Assistant will support the lab's daily operations and handle a range of research activities. The work includes experimental tasks in molecular cloning, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, mutagenesis, and cell culture. This role also involves keeping laboratory records and databases up to date, documenting procedures, and helping maintain the lab space and its physical organization.
Key Responsibilities
In this position, you will contribute to hands-on research work and ensure the laboratory runs smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
- Carry out experiments connected to molecular cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, mutagenesis, and cell culture.
- Maintain lab databases and accurately log experimental activities and procedures.
- Support the upkeep, cleanliness, and physical organization of the laboratory.
- Work across several projects and shift priorities as needed.
- Coordinate with multiple supervisors and follow assigned directions carefully.
Required Qualifications
- Prior background in Actinomyces genetics is required.
- Experience or advanced knowledge in a research specialization, including equipment, procedures, analysis methods, principles, theories, and concepts, is required.
- Ability to handle basic computer-based data acquisition tasks is required.
- Comfort moving between projects and managing several tasks at the same time is required.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills are required.
- Self-driven work style and initiative are required.
- Problem-solving ability is required.
- Reliability in attendance and punctuality is required, along with flexibility for schedule changes, weekend coverage, and additional hours when needed.
- Ability to work independently is required.
- Ability to receive direction from more than one supervisor is required.
- Strong organizational ability, including tracking time spent on project tasks, is required.
- Preferred: ability to perform calculations involving dilutions, molarity, and molecular weight.
Education
A bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field is preferred.
Employment Conditions

- A Live Scan background check must be completed before the start date.
- The role requires proof of COVID and flu vaccination.
- The position is a mandatory reporting role under CANRA, and the selected employee must sign the Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse.
Schedule
Working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Compensation and Benefits
UCLA states that it offers a full pay range. Final salary depends on budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licenses, certifications, and other business factors.
