Job description
Overview
This opportunity is for a kitchen team member at The King of Wessex in Bath, part of J D Wetherspoon. The position is designed for someone who enjoys working in a busy hospitality environment and can help keep the kitchen running efficiently while maintaining strong standards of cleanliness, food safety and customer service.
Ideal candidate
The employer is open to applicants with no prior kitchen experience. What matters most is a positive attitude, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and the ability to stay calm when things get busy. This role suits people who are dependable, friendly, and comfortable working collaboratively. It can be a fit for someone seeking either a long-term path or a role with additional shifts.
Pay and benefits
The advertised pay is £12.91 per hour. Benefits include a complimentary meal and drink while on shift, a 20% discount on food, drinks and hotel stays for the employee and up to three guests when off duty, and an extra £1 per hour for hours worked between midnight and 5:59am. The package also includes a bonus scheme worth up to 19% of pay, access to guaranteed-hours or variable-hours contracts, paid holiday, free shares after a qualifying period, and a loyalty reward scheme.
Key duties
The role involves preparing and cooking food as part of a team, presenting dishes to the required standard, and helping the kitchen operate smoothly. The work also includes using kitchen equipment such as grills, fryers and microwaves, meeting time and quality targets, and following hygiene, allergen, safety and cleanliness procedures throughout the shift.
Training and development
The company provides training and development support, starting with induction and role-specific learning and continuing with refresher training. There are also opportunities to progress through structured on-the-job training, apprenticeships, management academies, and cross-training into bar, floor or hotel areas. Career growth can include movement into team leader, kitchen shift leader or pub manager positions.
Working pattern
This is a 16-hour-per-week position with flexible scheduling across Monday to Sunday. Because the pubs trade early to late, shifts may include mornings, evenings, weekends and late finishes.
