Job description
About Laminar
Laminar, previously known as H2Ok Innovations, is building cleantech products that help industrial and manufacturing organizations improve efficiency and sustainability. Its AI co-pilot models and sensor-driven platform are used to optimize operations across process manufacturing, production, water usage, energy reduction, and waste reduction. The company is based at Greentown Labs, is woman-founded, and has support from investors including Greycroft, Construct Capital, 2048 Ventures, and Flybridge Capital. Its technology has been adopted by major companies such as Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company, AB InBev, and Mitsubishi Electric.
The team is focused on helping foundational industries unlock data they have not been able to fully use, enabling stronger performance and a competitive edge while contributing to Industry 4.0 and sustainability goals. Laminar values autonomy, accountability, high standards, creativity, authenticity, and steady growth. It is looking for ambitious, resourceful people who want to build the factory of the future.
Role Overview
Laminar is hiring a Backend Engineer to help develop the cloud backend systems that support real-time industrial data insights and sustainability outcomes at scale. Because the team is small, the role requires someone who can take ownership, identify issues quickly, and move them to completion. The company does not expect mastery of every tool in its stack; instead, it wants a strong backend foundation, comfort with scalable systems, and eagerness to learn. The title and scope will be aligned to experience.
What You Will Do
- Design, build, and support backend APIs and services that power the core product, partnering with senior engineers to release production-ready functionality.
- Contribute to the development and upkeep of data pipelines, including work with Databricks for large-scale data processing and analysis.
- Use infrastructure-as-code practices, including Terraform, to deploy and manage cloud infrastructure in a reliable and repeatable way.
- Improve application, database, and infrastructure performance by refining relational schemas and strengthening high-throughput data flows.
- Enhance monitoring, observability, and alerting across cloud systems to surface bottlenecks and reduce downtime.
- Embed security-minded practices into data handling and system design from the start.
- Keep building new technical and domain knowledge quickly in a fast-moving startup environment.
Requirements
- Hands-on backend development experience with strong Python and/or PHP skills.
- Strong working knowledge of SQL databases, including complex querying, query tuning, and performance optimization.
- Comfort with NoSQL database concepts and usage.
- Experience working with AWS and/or Azure.
- Understanding of data pipeline concepts such as ETL; exposure to Spark or Databricks is an advantage.
- Experience using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
- Awareness of security best practices in software and data systems.
- A strong ownership mindset and solid problem-solving ability.
Benefits and Perks
- Full-time employment with competitive pay and benefits.
- Work that has a direct influence on the product and company culture.
- A broad benefits package covering medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, transportation support, and health and wellness support.
- Employer-matched 401(k) plan.
- Equity participation.
- Bonus opportunities in addition to salary.
- A collaborative, dynamic, and inclusive workplace.
- Room for career growth and professional development.
- Access to the Greentown Labs startup and cleantech network.
- Laminar pays 100% of the individual premium for HMO medical, vision, and dental insurance.
- Flexible PTO.
- $90 per month transportation benefit.
- $65 per month health and wellness benefit.
- FSA access.
- 12 company-paid holidays.
- Employer-matching 401(k) described as uncommon at this stage.
- Greentown Labs membership and related resources, subject to change.
Hiring Process
The interview process includes a 15 to 20 minute phone screen with Laminar’s Head of Operations or a recruiter, followed by a 30 minute introductory call with the hiring manager. Next is an on-site interview that may include a short Greentown Labs tour, a technical overview, and a discussion or presentation with the hiring manager and several team members. Depending on the role, a skills exercise may be shared in advance and should take no more than an hour to prepare. The exercise may be recorded for team members or founders who cannot attend. If the candidate is not local, the on-site portion can be done virtually. Finalists for full-time roles will also have an in-person Founder’s Interview.
Final Steps
Laminar requests two professional references, ideally one from a current organization and one from a manager. If an offer is extended, a background check will be completed.
Additional Information
Laminar encourages women and nonbinary candidates to apply even if they do not match every requirement, reflecting its commitment to a diverse and inclusive team.
The company recently changed its domain to runlaminar.com and asks candidates to add that domain to their safe-senders list so they do not miss communications.
Laminar may use artificial intelligence tools to assist with parts of the hiring process, such as application review, resume analysis, or response evaluation. These tools support recruiters but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are made by people. Candidates who want more information about data processing can contact the company directly.
Pay ranges are set using Pave Compensation Software. The company also emphasizes that it offers equity and one of the more comprehensive startup benefit packages available at its stage.
Why Join Laminar
This is an opportunity to work on AI- and sensor-driven technology that is already changing how factories manage water, energy, and chemicals. The role offers exposure to a fast-growing startup, the chance to help shape the company’s direction, and the opportunity to contribute to a mission focused on industrial sustainability and modern manufacturing.
