Job description

Role overview

Jagex is hiring a Junior Game Designer to join the RuneScape Design team in Cambridge. This role suits someone who enjoys systems-led design, has a strong passion for RuneScape, and wants to help create content that will be experienced by a very large player base.

You will work on content from the earliest idea stage through to scripting and launch. The position includes training in RuneScript, Jagex’s internal scripting language, so you can turn design ideas into live game content. You’ll also work with experienced colleagues across different disciplines and contribute to the game’s regular weekly updates.

The role can support flexible working, but applicants must already be based in, or be prepared to move to, a location within easy commuting distance of the Cambridge office so they can attend onsite when needed.

Key duties

  • Create varied, engaging content for different parts of RuneScape, handling smaller pieces independently while supporting larger team projects.
  • Use RuneScript to implement your work in-game, building practical scripting skills with full training provided.
  • Keep design documents accurate and easy to follow so collaboration and development stay organised.
  • Develop a strong understanding of existing RuneScape systems, content, and community expectations to ensure new work fits naturally into the game.
  • Partner with designers, engineers, artists, and community colleagues to help deliver high-quality weekly updates.
  • Learn from player feedback and community insight, with support from the embedded Community Management team, to better understand what players want.

What the company is looking for

The ideal candidate should already know RuneScape well, including its skills, quests, progression systems, and player behaviour. A solid grasp of MMORPG progression, content loops, and systemic design is important, along with some exposure to scripting or programming that shows you can learn RuneScript quickly.

You should be able to organise your own workload, communicate progress clearly, and know when to ask for guidance. Experience working in a team is also important, whether that comes from game development, modding, or another creative environment.

Eligibility

This opportunity is only open to people who have permanent permission to work in the UK. The employer cannot offer visa sponsorship now or in the future, so applicants must already be able to prove their right to work without employer support.
