About the role

Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP is a major Canadian business law firm serving corporate clients across Canada, the United States, and international markets with Canadian interests. With more than 1,000 team members across Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary, and New York, the firm is known for a collaborative culture that values mentoring, shared learning, and professional growth.

The Junior Financial Analyst will support the firm and related stakeholders by preparing accurate, relevant, and timely financial information. The role focuses on handling incoming ad hoc requests, producing recurring reports, and assisting the team throughout the main reporting cycle.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee the financial reporting inbox and respond to requests for ad hoc reports from partners, legal assistants, and other finance and accounting teams.
  • Prepare one-off reports and regular monthly analyses for department leaders, office managing partners, committee chairs, and support department managers.
  • Analyze financial data covering revenue patterns, client behavior, department and office trends, salary and bonus calculations, profitability, and other related areas.
  • Work with the Pricing, Legal Project Management, and Client Development groups to meet their reporting needs and improve reports as client requirements evolve.
  • Support the Client Billing Services team by responding promptly to client-related questions.
  • Guide partners and senior leaders on the correct interpretation and use of financial information and terminology.
  • Assist in preparing and reviewing quarterly and annual reporting materials, including Contribution Analysis, business planning support, Thomson Reuters Peer Monitor benchmarking surveys, Statistics Canada surveys, and similar reports.
  • Monitor the budget inbox and address related questions.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information, including partner and employee income data.
  • Take the lead on special financial analysis and reporting initiatives as assigned.

Requirements

  • A university degree in a business-related field is required.
  • Two to three years of experience in an analytical role is required, ideally with exposure to budgeting and financial analysis, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience.
  • An accounting designation such as CA, CMA, CGA, or CPA is required, or the candidate must be actively working toward one.
  • Strong precision and attention to detail are essential.
  • Experience in a legal or professional services setting is considered an advantage.
  • A strong grasp of budgeting processes and their key components is expected.
  • Proven analytical capability to support budget oversight and detailed financial review is needed.
  • Ability to structure data effectively and create tailored reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Working knowledge of financial tools such as intermediate Excel, SQL, and Adobe Acrobat is preferred.
  • Exposure to ADERANT, Microsoft Power BI dashboards, and Microsoft SQL Reporting Services (SSRS) is an asset.
