The ideal candidate should already understand conventional mortgage underwriting, investor rules, and how appraisal reviews are handled.

Key Responsibilities

  • Check appraisal reports and supporting valuation documents for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with requirements.
  • Examine flood insurance records and other collateral-related documentation.
  • Review collateral files against investor standards, underwriting guidelines, and internal procedures.
  • Spot mismatches, irregularities, or signs of potentially fraudulent information in appraisal materials.
  • Make sure collateral risk issues are properly recorded and addressed.
  • Work with appraisal administration, collateral valuation, processing, and underwriting teams to close out appraisal-related questions and issues.
  • Explain underwriting decisions, findings, and required conditions clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Offer direction on collateral documentation needs and how to resolve outstanding conditions.
  • Release appraisal-related underwriting conditions before the loan reaches closing.
  • Keep underwriting records and file notes complete and accurate.
  • Complete appraisal reviews in a timely manner so loan processing and closing schedules stay on track.
  • Follow company rules, investor requirements, and regulatory standards at all times.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • At least 3 years of experience in conventional mortgage underwriting.
  • Working knowledge of agency, investor, and mortgage underwriting guidelines.
  • Hands-on experience reviewing residential appraisals and collateral documents.
  • Solid understanding of mortgage lending workflows and loan-file documentation.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Very high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-moving environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in reviewing appraisal reports and valuation support materials.
  • Understanding of flood insurance requirements and compliance expectations.
  • Familiarity with mortgage underwriting systems and loan origination platforms.
  • Ability to detect collateral risks and documentation issues early.

Work Environment
