Job description
About the opportunity
BDO Rotorua is looking for an Intermediate Accountant who wants to build a long-term career in a professional services environment. This is a chance to join a locally owned team that values people, development, and a balanced working style rather than a purely numbers-driven approach.
The firm offers a relaxed, informal, and collaborative culture where you can work closely with both colleagues and clients. You will also have early exposure to partners and the opportunity to grow your responsibilities quickly, with a genuine pathway toward partnership for those who want it.
Along with a competitive starting salary, the role includes a flexible work policy, health and wellness benefits, and discounted employee health insurance. The workplace also supports professional development and study through a national network.
BDO Rotorua emphasises that great client service starts with looking after its people first, supporting professional growth, personal fulfilment, and work-life balance. The Rotorua lifestyle is another advantage, with access to lakes, forests, the Bay of Plenty coastline, and the central plateau for year-round recreation.
Role overview
This full-time position is based at the Rotorua office and includes the option to work from home. The role is for 40 hours per week and offers a salary expected in the range of NZD 68,000 to NZD 78,000, plus additional benefits, depending on experience.
What you will do
You will support clients through accounting, compliance, and advisory work, from the point a job is assigned through to review and finalisation.
- Prepare coding and working papers for annual financial statements and tax returns across a variety of client types.
- Complete financial statements and tax returns after client meetings, including monthly, quarterly, and half-yearly accounting for some clients.
- Prepare GST, PAYE, FBT, and RWT returns in line with internal policies and systems.
- Produce monthly client reports and draft related correspondence.
- Handle client enquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Respond promptly to queries from Inland Revenue and other agencies.
- Carry out special assignments requested by the partners.
What we are looking for
The ideal candidate brings solid experience in New Zealand accounting practice work, especially business advisory, along with strong attention to quality and accuracy.
- At least 2–3 years of experience in business advisory within a New Zealand accounting firm.
- High standards with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with staff and clients.
- A positive, team-oriented attitude with the drive to keep growing professionally.
- Willingness to take ownership of your work and development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and solve problems proactively.
- An undergraduate degree in accounting or a closely related field.
Eligibility
Applicants must already be in New Zealand and hold the legal right to work there. Candidates who are not currently residing in New Zealand with the right to work will not be considered.
Additional information
The role is designed for someone seeking career growth in a supportive environment that values learning, teamwork, and balance. Candidates are encouraged to submit a CV and cover letter explaining their interest in joining BDO Rotorua.
