Job description
Job purpose
The role is focused on troubleshooting, repairing, recommissioning, and maintaining field instrumentation used in gas turbines, steam turbines, waste heat boilers, and desalination plant auxiliaries. The goal is to keep the plant running efficiently and reduce equipment downtime.
Key responsibilities
The technician will respond to breakdowns and carry out planned maintenance on power and desalination plant instrumentation, often with limited supervision. This includes evaluating the job requirements, choosing the right tools and equipment, and using the computerized maintenance system to requisition spare parts and record completed work. The role also requires ensuring all maintenance activities comply with safety procedures and operational standards, supporting root-cause analysis for recurring faults, and helping identify effective long-term fixes. In addition, the technician will train new craftsmen on the job so they can develop the skills needed for planned maintenance and repair tasks.
Qualifications and technical background
A higher secondary qualification or diploma is required. The ideal candidate should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance tools and have a strong understanding of plant safety. Prior experience in a power plant or desalination plant is important, preferably with hands-on exposure to the maintenance and calibration of field instruments such as pressure, temperature, level, and flow measuring devices. Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic valve actuation systems, CO2 fire protection systems, and infrared gas detection systems is also preferred.
Work environment and conditions
The position involves working under time pressure and technical pressure, where mistakes can lead to major costs through delays, equipment damage, or personal injury. The technician may be placed on shift duty and can be called out at any time to support breakdown response for the shift operations manager. The work environment may include very hot, dirty areas and elevated platforms.
Additional requirements
The selected candidate should stay current with new technologies and control concepts. The role also requires the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and manuals, along with practical knowledge or experience in electrical, electronic, computer, hydraulic, and pneumatic devices.
