Job description

Role overview

We are looking for an Instrument Engineering Specialist to support a major oil and gas operation in Qatar. The position focuses on providing expert instrumentation and Fire & Gas engineering input across EPC and startup phases, continuing through handover to the permanent asset team. The goal is to make sure project outputs align with Operations expectations for safety, reliability, and maintainability throughout the full design life of the facility.

About the employer

The hiring organization is an international workforce solutions provider serving the energy, process, and infrastructure sectors. It works as a strategic delivery partner, helping clients secure the talent needed to deliver successful projects across a global network of employees and contractors.

Core duties

  • Offer broad engineering support in instrumentation and Fire & Gas systems, including participation in design reviews, SIL workshops, assessments, verification activities, HAZOP studies, commissioning, startup, failure analysis, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Create and roll out surveillance and administration programs for critical instrumentation and Fire & Gas systems on new projects, with an emphasis on reliability, availability, and cyber security.
  • Document best practices in the specialist area and propose actions that improve performance.
  • Prepare work plans and schedules that help complete assigned tasks efficiently and in line with section and division KPIs.
  • Provide technical guidance to other disciplines and functions whenever needed to support wider business goals.
  • Oversee and direct work performed by contractors, consultants, and service providers.
  • Support junior engineers in applying company integrity and reliability systems.
  • Help ensure tie-in requirements for all systems under the assigned scope are completed smoothly.
  • Maintain an issue log, track critical problems, and help resolve risks, including those linked to new technologies that could affect project reliability, availability, and cyber security.
  • Assist with high-risk commissioning on complex, large-scale projects through close system surveillance, tuning and optimization of instruments and Fire & Gas systems, and advisory support to Operations and Maintenance teams.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, or an equivalent qualification, is required.
  • At least 8 years of experience in an oil and gas environment is needed.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge is expected in DCS, PLCs, ESD/F&G systems, anti-surge control systems, metering systems, and turbine/compressor control systems.
  • Full understanding of SIL requirements is essential.

Additional information

This role is based in Qatar and is intended for work with a major oil and gas company. The assignment is contract-based and onsite. The position supports project execution from EPC through startup and handover, with particular attention to operational readiness, system integrity, and safe commissioning.

Who can apply

Professionals with an engineering degree and substantial oil and gas instrumentation experience, especially those familiar with Fire & Gas, control, and safety systems, are suitable for this opportunity.
