Job description
About the role
This ongoing full-time position sits within a high-performing and committed team in the Victorian Public Service. The role calls on your practical industry knowledge to support Corrections and Justice Services in a prison-based setting.
The advertised classification is VPS Grade COG2B, with a salary range of $85,787 to $98,651, plus superannuation.
About the business unit
The Vocational Services Team brings together three core streams: education, programs, and industries. Its purpose is to help prisoners prepare for release and improve their chances of finding work after release through prison employment, structured on-the-job learning, targeted education, and personal development activities.
About the role in practice
The Industry Officer works as part of a multidisciplinary team and is responsible for training and overseeing prisoners in the prison’s commercial and service industry areas. These areas include prison maintenance, horticulture, kitchen operations, hospitality, laundry, metal fabrication, powder coating, nylon coating, assembly, and textiles.
The main aim of the position is to support prisoner training and employment while also helping the site meet production targets and service obligations.
The role reports to the Industry Supervisor and, through that line, to the Industry Manager for production-related processes and requirements.
Key duties
- Train and supervise prisoners employed in the commercial and service industry areas of the prison.
- Manage work areas effectively so that prisoners, staff, and visitors remain safe and secure, including maintaining suitable surveillance, engagement, and compliance with occupational health and safety and security procedures.
- Identify opportunities for prisoners to participate in integrated education and support their involvement in prisoner employment.
- Work weekend shifts, as this position requires weekend work.
About you
The preferred candidate will bring a genuine commitment to collaborative work with staff, prisoners, and external service providers to support a whole-of-justice approach aimed at reducing re-offending.
You should also have current knowledge of modern industry methods, along with the ability to maintain industry equipment and work within the procedures set out in the Prison Industries Managers Manual.
Application and selection requirements
Applicants must submit a resume and covering letter. Files may be uploaded in .doc, .docx, .pdf, .txt, or .rtf format.
The successful applicant will need to complete pre-employment screening, which may include reference checks, a national police check, and misconduct screening. Depending on the position, additional checks may also be required, such as VicRoads checks, driver licence checks, medical assessments, Working with Children Checks, and a Declaration of Private Interests for executive and responsible officer roles.
If you need support or adjustments during the recruitment and selection process, or require another format for application materials, you can contact the person listed on the advertisement.
To be considered, applications must be submitted by 11:59pm on 12 July 2026.
