Job description
Role overview
Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai is hiring for two HR Business Partner positions: one permanent role and one 9-month fixed-term role. This is a full-time, onsite opportunity in Auckland.
The role suits a pragmatic and reflective HR professional who is comfortable working in situations where context, judgement, and human understanding matter. The organisation supports communities dealing with complex challenges, and the same grounded, people-centred approach is expected internally when advising leaders and supporting teams.
You will work with a curious mindset, apply sound judgement, and use policy as guidance rather than relying on rigid answers. The focus is on practical solutions that help both people and the organisation succeed.
The organisation is actively living its Te Tiriti commitment through everyday practice. That means openness to learning, willingness to challenge traditional approaches, and an understanding that strong people practices are informed by perspectives beyond HR alone.
What you will do
In this subject matter expert role, you will partner closely with the General Manager as a trusted advisor, helping shape people practices that align with organisational values and the realities of a complex operating environment.
You will support senior leaders to make sound, compliant, people-focused decisions by weighing risk, considering alternatives, and offering thoughtful recommendations where the best answer may require nuance rather than a textbook response.
- Work alongside leaders to provide dependable HR guidance, coaching, and support across employee relations, performance, engagement, and development.
- Handle a broad employment relations portfolio, including performance management, conduct matters, conflict resolution, and workplace investigations, in line with legislation and best practice.
- Evaluate risk, consider different pathways, and provide clear recommendations that lead to strong decisions and better outcomes for people.
- Develop trusted relationships across the organisation, influence leadership practice, and contribute to culture, equity, inclusion, and employee experience initiatives.
- Help embed people practices that reflect Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, inclusion, and Māori aspirations within a purpose-driven organisation.
What the organisation is looking for
The ideal candidate will bring both professional capability and a willingness to learn. Experience can come from paid work, voluntary work, or community responsibilities, including roles connected to church, marae, iwi, or whānau.
- A tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business, Organisational Development, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated commitment through actions to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to the Mission’s values of Manaakitanga, Atawhai, Rangapū, and Mana Tika, Mana Ōrite.
- A working style that aligns broadly with the Designs to Leads stages of the HRNZ Capability Framework – The Path.
- Strong collaboration skills and a team-oriented approach to sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues, and improving ways of working.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to give clear, practical HR and employment relations advice to a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders.
- A full New Zealand Driver Licence.
Organisation context
Te Tāpui Atawhai - Auckland City Mission works alongside people in Tāmaki Makaurau who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, hunger, and isolation.

Its work is shaped by Te Tiriti o Waitangi and guided by the values of Manaakitanga, Rangapū, Atawhai, and Manatika/Mana Ōrite.
The Mission believes in people, shared responsibility, and hope, and invites applicants who share these values to join the team.
