Job description
About Huckleberry
Huckleberry creates products and experiences designed to help families find more support and ease in everyday life. More than 5 million families rely on its app as a parenting companion, powered by a combination of pediatric expertise, data science, AI, and behavioral science. The company is expanding rapidly and continuing to broaden its offerings to better support families at every stage.
Role Overview
Huckleberry is hiring an experienced HR Generalist for a part-time 1099 contract arrangement. The expected commitment is 10 to 20 hours per week. This position combines core HR work with people operations, making it a strong fit for someone who is comfortable handling compliance, building thoughtful processes, and shaping the way teams work, develop, and operate.
The role is focused on keeping people practices fair, practical, and future-ready. You will own the performance feedback cycle from start to finish and handle sensitive employee relations matters with discretion, professionalism, and care. The work will involve creating the systems and structure that help the team do its best work.
This position suits someone who pays close attention to operational detail, prefers building repeatable systems over one-off fixes, and remains steady and composed when dealing with complex HR situations.
People Operations & Employee Experience
- Lead the planning, launch, and ongoing administration of performance feedback cycles, including process design, employee communication, completion tracking, and follow-up coordination.
- Help strengthen a workplace culture centered on growth, collaboration, innovation, and Huckleberry’s core values.
- Work with managers to establish consistent team development practices and ensure they are prepared to run effective performance conversations.
- Support employee engagement by spotting trends, identifying underlying causes, and recommending practical improvements to team collaboration and ways of working.
HR Compliance & Employee Relations
- Act as a confidential and trusted contact for employee relations concerns by listening carefully, gathering facts, conducting professional investigations, and helping guide issues toward constructive resolution.
- Make sure HR policies and practices comply with applicable federal and state laws, including requirements related to multi-state employees and contractors.
- Use performance management as both a development and compliance tool, ensuring records and processes meet legal expectations.
- Approach sensitive HR situations calmly and with good judgment, helping the organization stay grounded through difficult moments.
- Keep HR records and processes organized, accurate, and compliant, with strong attention to detail.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience in HR, with exposure to both traditional HR and people operations work.
- Strong employee relations experience, including discretion, empathy, active listening, conflict de-escalation, and the ability to identify root issues.
- Good working knowledge of HR compliance across multiple U.S. states, including employee and contractor classification.
- A systems-oriented mindset with the ability to design frameworks and processes instead of relying on reactive fixes; uses first-principles thinking to address performance problems at the source.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects end-to-end, from planning and process design through communication, implementation, and follow-up.
- Ability to handle pressure calmly and guide HR matters in a professional, compliant way during challenging situations.
- Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Comfort working independently in a remote, part-time, contract role.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with employer benefits administration, including open enrollment, employee sign-up workflows, and communications, even if vendor negotiations are not part of the role.
- Experience supporting a fast-growing startup or consumer app business.
- Exposure to HRIS platforms or people operations tools.
- Experience helping build or scale HR functions from the ground up.
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or another comparable HR certification.
