Job description

Role overview

The Salem VA Medical Center is looking to fill several Environmental Service Technician roles within Environmental Management Services. This position supports the patient care experience by helping keep Veterans’ facilities clean, sanitary, and safe.

What you’ll do

  • Carry out a mix of light and heavy cleaning tasks, along with day-to-day housekeeping work.
  • Keep patient care spaces clean and safe by responding quickly to spills, removing trash, replacing light bulbs, and vacuuming or polishing floors.
  • Clean wards, patient rooms, storage areas, offices, hallways, restrooms, shower rooms, and other assigned locations.
  • Sweep, mop, and machine-scrub floors; vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture; empty waste containers; clean light fixtures and Venetian blinds; wash walls, windows, and ceilings using small ladders; restock toilet paper and towel dispensers; and move furniture as needed.
  • Work with limited supervision and follow assigned cleaning routines.

Qualifications and evaluation

No specific length of formal training or prior experience is required, but you must be able to demonstrate enough knowledge, skill, and ability to handle the duties of the role. Your resume should clearly describe any relevant training or experience. Selection will follow the Office of Personnel Management Federal Wage System qualification standards, including an initial screen-out review and further evaluation against the remaining job elements.

Qualifying experience may include paid work, unpaid work, and volunteer service, including roles through National Service programs such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, as well as other community, philanthropic, student, social, religious, or professional organizations. Volunteer work may count toward qualifying experience. A full year of work is generally considered 35 to 40 hours per week, and part-time experience is credited based on actual hours worked. Applicants seeking credit for experience should describe their duties and responsibilities in detail and include weekly hours for each position.

Working hours and physical demands

The schedule for this role is second shift, from 3:15 PM to 12:00 AM. The job involves continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. It may also require the occasional use of powered cleaning equipment weighing more than 50 pounds.

Working conditions and safety

Most work takes place indoors in spaces with adequate heat, lighting, and ventilation. Some duties may be performed outside in varying weather, including heat, cold, and inclement conditions. Protective equipment may be required in some situations. Exposure to contagious diseases, blood, and blood-related secretions is part of the role, and care must be taken to avoid injuries such as broken bones while using ladders, heavy equipment, or hazardous materials.
