Role overview

The Hostel Cleaner – Relief position supports the cleanliness, safety, and day-to-day upkeep of the hostel and drop-in spaces operated by Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre in Toronto. This role covers routine and scheduled cleaning, helps keep track of supplies, and supports compliance with workplace health, safety, and facility standards. The position works closely with shelter staff, contractors, and supervisors to maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment for residents and employees.

This is a unionized role and the reporting line will vary based on assignment, either to the Manager of Shelter Operations or to the Drop-In Supervisor.

Key duties

  • Carry out detailed daily cleaning across the hostel premises.
  • Complete recurring weekly, monthly, and other scheduled or as-needed cleaning assignments.
  • Inspect the property for maintenance concerns and escalate issues quickly to the Manager.
  • Order, receive, and monitor supplies according to agency procedures.
  • Handle garbage, recycling, and compost disposal correctly and keep waste streams separated.
  • Follow required health and safety standards, including Fire Safety, Public Health, Hostel Standards, the Ontario Building Code, W.H.M.I.S., and municipal by-laws.
  • Work with shelter staff and supervisors to help program procedures run smoothly.
  • Coordinate respectfully with contractors, vendors, and fellow team members to uphold facility standards.
  • Introduce new staff or volunteers to safe storage practices and proper use of cleaning and hygiene supplies.
  • Record resident-related concerns or interactions through communication logs or staff updates.
  • Keep cleaning and maintenance supplies stored securely and watch inventory levels to prevent shortages.
  • Look out for signs of pests or rodents and report any findings.
  • Assist with community activities, such as the Christie-Ossington Annual Street Festival, when needed.
  • Take on additional responsibilities assigned by the Manager of Shelter Operations or the Director of Hostels & Housing.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants should bring a respectful, sensitive approach to working with people experiencing homelessness or marginalization, along with strong collaboration and communication skills. Previous cleaning or maintenance experience is preferred, especially in shelter, commercial, or institutional settings. Familiarity with W.H.M.I.S. and basic health and safety practices is important. The role also calls for careful attention to detail, good time management, and the ability to receive, store, and track supplies responsibly. Candidates must be comfortable lifting items and working in outdoor or changing conditions, and should be adaptable, proactive, and open to learning new practices. A current criminal record check is required.
