Job description
Role overview
Sainsbury’s stores are lively, high-energy places where every day can look different and food is at the centre of everything. As a Home Delivery Driver, you will play a key part in getting online grocery orders to customers and creating a reliable doorstep experience.
Your main duties
- Drive a 3.5-tonne van to take grocery orders to customers accurately, safely, and within the promised timeframe.
- Carry out vehicle checks to make sure the van is tidy, organised, safe to drive, and that delivery totes are secured before heading out.
- Support customers in a professional and friendly way by answering questions, handling substitutions, and keeping them informed of any delays.
- Learn enough about products, services, and promotions to make useful recommendations.
- When you are not on deliveries, help with tasks elsewhere in the store as needed.
Eligibility and application checks
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- You need a full UK or EU driving licence that has been held for a minimum of 12 months.
- Your licence must have no more than 6 penalty points.
- You will need to complete an online driving risk assessment during the interview process.
- If selected, you will also complete a driving assessment when you start.
- You must have the legal right to work in the UK.
What the role asks of you
- Deliver excellent service and represent the store well at customers’ homes.
- Be confident driving a large vehicle through busy residential roads, narrow lanes, and different delivery settings.
- Work well in a fast-paced, physically active environment and use your initiative to solve problems.
- Be comfortable working independently as well as contributing to a team.
- Stay flexible and productive, supporting the store across different tasks when required.
- Adapt quickly to digital tools and technology used in the role.
- Be able to move shopping containers weighing up to 15 kg.
Safety and monitoring
The company uses in-cab AI cameras to monitor driving behaviour and support compliance with road rules and defensive driving expectations, helping protect drivers and other road users.
Benefits and rewards
- 10% colleague discount at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, and Habitat after four weeks, rising to 15% off at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday.
- Free food and hot drinks for store colleagues.
- Holiday entitlement based on hours worked, plus maternity and paternity leave.
- Pension matching from 4% to 7.5% of your contributions.
- Access to Sainsbury’s share schemes with discounted share purchases.
- Extra shopping perks such as discounts on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers, and more.
- Wellbeing support through a free confidential Employee Assistance Programme.
Additional notes
Vacancies can close quickly, so early applications are encouraged. If you need an update on your application, you should contact the store directly.
Inclusion and support
Sainsbury’s aims to be a welcoming and inclusive place to work and shop. The business offers enhanced discretionary leave for families, support for carers, access to internal colleague networks, and resources to help teams work effectively. It also provides mentorship, training, and career progression opportunities, alongside diversity-focused initiatives and events. As a Disability Confident Leader, the company may offer an interview through its online assessment process to candidates with the strongest match to the essential criteria. Reasonable adjustments can be requested during the application or interview stages.
