Job description

Role overview

Sainsbury’s stores are busy, energetic places where each day can look different. Food is central to everything they do, and the stores play an important role in their local communities by offering strong value, quality, and service. In this role, you will be the person delivering online grocery orders to customers’ homes.

Eligibility

  • You need to be at least 18 years old.
  • A full UK or EU driving licence must have been held for a minimum of 12 months and must not have more than 6 points.
  • You will be asked to complete an online driving risk assessment during the interview process, and if selected, a driving assessment will take place when you start.
  • You must already have the right to work in the UK.

Key duties

  • Drive a 3.5-tonne van to deliver groceries to customers’ doorsteps on time and in good condition.
  • Carry out vehicle checks to make sure the van is tidy, safe, roadworthy, and that delivery containers are secure before setting off.
  • Provide excellent customer service by answering questions, handling substitutions, and keeping customers informed of any delays.
  • Learn about products, services, and promotions so you can make useful recommendations.
  • Support the store team with additional tasks when you are not on delivery rounds.

What success looks like

  • A warm, approachable manner and a genuine interest in helping customers have a great doorstep delivery experience.
  • Confidence driving a larger vehicle across different routes, including busy streets, narrow lanes, and varied residential areas.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, physical, high-energy environment and solving problems independently while still being a team player.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to work productively across different store tasks, with full training provided in multiple skills.
  • Ease with digital tools and technology, plus the ability to move shopping containers weighing up to 15 kg.
  • Awareness that the company uses in-cab AI cameras to monitor driving behaviour, support road-law compliance, and reinforce defensive-driving standards.

Benefits and rewards

  • 10% discount card for Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu, and Habitat after four weeks, rising to 15% off at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday.
  • Free food and hot drinks for store colleagues.
  • Holiday allowance based on your working hours, plus maternity and paternity leave.
  • Pension matching between 4% and 7.5% of your contributions.
  • Access to discounted Sainsbury’s share schemes.
  • Special savings on gym memberships, restaurants, holidays, retail vouchers, and more.
  • Wellbeing support, including free access to a confidential Employee Assistance Programme.
